Fun and exciting targets

Back in the day, it was water filled milk jugs and pop cans. Hit 'em with the 586 loaded with 125gr JHP's over a heaping helping of 2400. On sunny days you could make rainbows.:)

Friday night I'm gonna run the first batch of 250gr XTP's (over H110) through my EMF 1892 in 45 Colt. The milk jugs don't have a chance. Can't wait.

My all time favorite reactive target is, cheap warm ROOT BEER, well shaken. And a lesson in effect when you look at the back of the can.:what:

Try blowing up something made out of metal and batteries. Kids love that stuff!

Tannerite is pretty cool. So are gallon milk jugs full of water as long as you use rifle calibers and soft point ammo.

Another fun thing is if you can get your hands on some tracer rounds and you have a place to shoot where catching things on fire isn't a concern... 20 oz soda bottles full of gasoline make a nice little pyrotechnic display... or so I've heard

check out the local dollar store.

When I used to shoot out doors I would buy cans of shaving cream. At a buck a can it is fun to add to the mix of empty soda cans full of water.

but the tig tig of hitting steal plates is fun. we wore out our .22 spinner.

Pumpkins on hay bails was fun till the next spring. We didn't plan to grow them... but it was free targets for the next fall.

The only problem I have with vegetables and eggs is the smell a few days later. I've been out to the range after an egg shoot, and let me tell you it was ripe.
Jeff F - you're a better shot than me brother. At 100 yds? :what:
I *do* like the idea of charcoal briquettes and clay pigeons. And I've seen people shoot at paintballs (from 200 yds no less). Also tannerite seems like it'd be fun. Unfortunately I don't think they'll allow it at my range.
Cans and milk jugs with various fuilds are always fun, but are a mess and bother to have to clean up.
How about alka-seltzer tablets? After all of the fruit, vegatables, cookies, etc. that everyone leaves - the animals that eat all of that are going to need some relief. :D

For pistols I would recommend the cheapo onions you can get at Walmart. They explode when hit dead center and do nothing if you nick em giving positive target feedback. As long as you shoot your targets there is nothing to clean up.

And in a day or so you will not have any smells or visuals like that of eggs, watermelons, etc. Just be sure they are out at 10 yards otherwise you will get a diced onion shower :)

Good luck and be safe!

We've used Ritz crackers - took the ones with bullet holes home to show the women-folk..

Dumb question to follow...

I love the idea of using paintballs for a reactive target, but how do you shoot at them? Normally we tape the targets to a piece of plywood that is upagainst the backstop. Not sure how to set up paintballs, but it sounds like too much fun not to try!!

Thanks!

I have used the shaving cream can. It gives a spectacular snowy effect. But does anyone know if they could be flammable for any reason?

For the young ones, playing soccer with some colored golf balls and a 5 gallon bucket as a goal is always a hoot.

You can tape em to stuff, but it's a lot more fun to shoot them off of golf tees. Just drill a length of 2x4 for the tees and set em up.

I agree with the people who say use biodegradable stuff. I LOVE to shoot oranges when I can. There are also a lot of inexpensive reactive steel targets for .22LR out there

A trip to the Salvation Army can get you a bunch of old plates, bowls, wine flutes or other stemware, for about a dime apiece, all excellent things that shatter when shot.

old furniture.... the lesser the quality the better.... just be sure to yell "timber!" when it's falling over. ;-)

I second the "anything biodegradable" argument. You've got enough brass to pick up that digging around for pieces of milk jug and aluminum cans just ain't much fun any more.

A flare strapped to a propane tank shot with a long range gun is pretty damn fun.

Training grenades are fun, if you can find them.

Then there's Tannerite.

A drop of Crazy Glue will do many things. Sticking all manner of targets to plywood is probably one of them.

I have used the shaving cream can. It gives a spectacular snowy effect. But does anyone know if they could be flammable for any reason?

My can of Edge Shaving Gel contains 2 propellants: isobutane (flammable) and isopentane (highly flammable). The MSDS says, "Do not impact container."

I, personally, choose NOT to use such items (propane tanks, aerosol cans, etc.) as targets; too much risk and unpredictability for this ex-paramedic just shy of a chemistry degree. Burns tend to dampen your fun at the range.

There are those reactive plastic targets. They bounce around and you take them home to use another day.

Tannerite is cool, +10 on that. But 22LR will not work, you need hi power rifle
for it to work properly.
