I'm on the fore-front of introducing my youngsters to firearms, and I'm trying to come up with better things for them to shoot then paper. because, as any parent knows, it's more exciting when you do something and things HAPPEN. cause and effect. I was thinking maybe hanging water bottles, filled with colored water or something.
I also thought this might be a little easier to understand what guns do than just punching holes in paper. they already know they go boom, and they aren't quite ready for the "faces of death" approach.

okay, and sometimes I get bored of paper targets too........:p

Charcoal briquettes are good for .22's.

Try to think of things that are biodegrable, makes cleanup after the shoot so much easier than picking up pieces of plastic from busted water bottles. Like Larry said animal crackers or maybe some old fruit, expired eggs.

Eggs

They are cheap, have a nice exploding effect, and are completely 100% bio-degradable.

Among water/soda bottles, i have a rather plentiful supply of veggies in the summer. Mainly tomatos and squash/zuchini. Sometimes, we forget to pick them and the squash and zuchs become to large to eat (seeds are large and taste better when small). Those all go to my range down in the fields. Rotten tomatos, apples and oranges...just whatever i happen to have laying around. And since they are biodegradable, theres no need to clean them up. Ballons filled with air or water work well too. This may not be an option for you, but in spring its always fun to try and shoot the heads off dandelions with a .22.

Make a frame, and dangle eggs from it with masking tape -- makes great targets. I like to back it with an old cardboard box -- so you can tell where the misses went and correct.

I like grouse, quail, pheasant, squirrel, rabbits and deer. :D

Actually, cheap suckers work very well and explode nicely.

A target with a lesson:

Little 3" green and/or brown toy soldiers. I suggest it has a valuable lesson, because if you shoot people, not only do they fall down...they die. Never point at people?! Dumb lesson? Too dramatic? I don't know. JMHO.

For me, and my daughter, NOTHING beats steel...ting, ting, ting.

Hmmmm. Does it rhyme with Hillary Clinton?

Cans of Sam's Club Cola, everyone knows that crap isn't supposed to be drunk. :D

Simple soda (or adult beverage) cans filled with water are reactive to .22's, especially hollow points.
If that gets boring bust out the centerfires and some cans of tannerite :)

I use generic soda in aluminum cans. Choose a bright, visible color. Shake them up, lay them out, blast away, cash in the trash when you're done.

I work at an electronics store, and every year when we change out our stock I get all of the dummy(display) cordless phones, DVD players, etc... They make great targets :)

Golf balls... Work fine and last a very long time with all pistol calibers and unless you get a dead on center hit just about any rifle caliber. :D

However, the better shot you are the further you must walk to collect them. :(
