Fun and exciting targets

Plaster of paris in ice cube trays. Just put a paper clip or twisty tie in them so you can hang them on something. Big poof of white smoke when you hit them.

I can't be the only THRer who enjoys the metallic snow flakes you get when you hit a CD just right...

Cheap, fun, safe targets

Ice.

In the winter I like to shoot chunks of ice from rubber water buckets. Usually about 2 gallons of water, centerfire calibers and shotguns are the most fun. Ice cubes from your freezer or from a purchased bag would work great for 22’s but you would have to work fast when warm outside. No clean-up.

In all seriousness, that is a fantastic idea. I can't wait for Saturday! Thanks! :)

Baggies or balloons of flour .. Just thought of it a sec ago .. I am gonna try it ..
That could be interesting. Flour tossed in the air is explosive. I wonder if the bullet would be hot enough to set it off when the flour is dispersed?

Probably not - I imagine it would be long gone before the flour/air ratio reached explosive levels but still...

When I was a kid my Dad would put a board with a target on it into a big rubber tire off a dump truck and push it down a large hill at our farm. The tire then bounces as it comes down the hill. He told use that it was like trying to hit a deer on the run. All us kids would see who could come the closest to the centre of the target. This was alot of fun when I was a kid and we would do it for hours at a time.

For ages 6 & up, golf balls are fun for really good shooters. Take turns shooting, comment on the merits of that last shot, and nudge the ball out to the 100 yard line.

The same game can be played with the white & yellow plastic balls sold in sporting goods stores. They're hollow & their surface is covered with holes, and they're available in two sizes, about 4" diameter and maybe 2 1/2" diameter. These are less challenging than golf balls, they're cheap, reusable a dozen or more times, and lively entertainment.

If you shoot vegetables, cabbages provide a great reaction to center-fire ammunition.
:D

Get a big bag of cheap lollipops. Stick then in the ground at 15-25 yards and pop their little heads off with a 22 or pellet gun.

You can get those big lollipops for longer distances, but they cost more.

Shotgun shell hulls are fun too. I've used brass that is no longer reloadable for targets as well, albeit for airgun pistols. Just run a string through the primer hole with a knot to hold the brass in place.
I wouldn't recommend anything that will break apart into sharp bits, like the glasses or plates. The next range user may end up with a nasty foot injury.

2 liter bottles of soda, emptied at your leisure, refilled w/ water, frozen & then shot at w/ shotgun -- nice watching them explode. Also, bowling pins are fun and if you can find one, an exterior car panel (fender, door, whatver). -- all these can be alot of fun to shoot at.

Walnuts make good targets as well. In fall, they drop off the trees and i just sit on my back patio or deck with the .22 and plink away. Also my house is on top of a hill and below me are several walnut trees with a mountian behind and its fun to sit on the deck and try to pick them off the trees with the 22.

Bowling pins last quite a while with handguns.

Small propane bottles occasionally put road flares out, set them next to burning sterno which doesn't blow out as easily.

Tannerite is fun, but only for rifles.

I have yet to be able to ignite shaving cream, but it makes a nice mess.

Oranges with a handgun make great showers.

Buy a few "gimmick rounds" (detonating, tracers, etc.), some people can't get enough of those.

Raw eggs with a .22 rifle.

I forgot about that. Just set them in the brush and plink away.
