Some ranges use a length of bright plastic cord, such as an orange weed wacker cord, placed in the barrel and out the ejection port.

How about a piece of wood whittled to shape to wedge in the ejection port, with its protruding end painted in a bright color?

These are required at CMP rifle matches even with the bolt back. They are basically one size fits all and tells someone from a distance that the action is open which an empty case won't.

Our range requires one of those Midway yellow chamber empty indicators like grizz22 and strat81 suggested. One must be in every uncased firearm. You can buy them at the range at a discount.

My Otis cleaning kit came with a bright orange hook that can be used as an open chamber indicator as well. It has the added benefit of capturing light to allow one to check the barrel also.

A spent case is the easiest and cheapest. But for a more obvious way I like the Otis flags.

Funny thing happened.

I'm at a range that I was invited to by a friend. As we're laying our guns out, they call a cease-fire. I have my AR, ejection port up, laying on the bench and the range safety guy tells me to unload it.

I had a yellow mag block with the tongue that goes thru the ejection port when inserted. Many of the places I have shot require them.

We had people front of the firing line by the time the safety guy requested I "unload". Luckily, I had another one in my bag and showed it to him so he didn't make me "clear" the AR while there were people out there.

The lesson learned was- do whatever the safety guy tells you to do- unless they don't know- then you need to educate them. Do it nicely.. I'd suggest a piece of weed-wacker filament- 12 to 18" should be enough. Shove it thru the barrel and leave it clearly hanging out of the ejection port. That should satisfy any safety officer.
