My ammo is extremely hard to get out of my semi-auto magazines. I have to almost pry the first couple out when I'm trying unload them. I have shot the carry ammo out of the gun and didn't have any problems. Do you all think that this is a sign that this is not the ideal carry ammo for my weapon even though it's fed the once or twice I've shot it. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm carrying Speer Gold Dot Short Barrels currently.

New mags = strong springs. They'll relax a bit after some use and it should get easier to unload. Shouldn't matter what type or brand of ammo you use.

The gun is probably 2.5 years old at this point and been shot a lot. I'm not overly concerned because they shoot when they are supposed to. But they are hell to get out.

Don't pull the cartridges out, push from the rear towards the front. In other words, place your thumb over the primer area and push forward. Each cartridge should fly out with some speed, so be careful not to put your eye out.

Imagine that 911 call. "I hit my eye with a bullet!" "Where's the gun, sir?" "The gun didn't go off!..."

Be safe.

That is exactly what I'm doing but the first probably three make be both push them like one would normally do and with my other hand push slightly upwards so they don't hit the front of the magazine.

Smith and Wesson what? They've had bunches of different autoloaders over the years.

I apologize, you know what they say about assume right? My signature has a list of the firearms that I tend to ask questions about on these forums. So by Smith and Wesson I am referring to the SW990L that is listed there and figured that by saying S&W people would understand since there's only one.

Why are you unloading the magazines?

Well because I can't afford to shoot my PPA and am unwilling to carry FMJ. When I'm at the range there is generally two of us so we shoot two magazines at a time.

I seem to be having issues with this post!!! Hope I've cleared this up for everyone. I'm doing everything technically correct as far as I know. In every other semi auto I've handled the ammo comes right out of the magazine. With this one the lip of the magazine and the strength of the spring seem to be keeping the first few rounds from coming right out. I have to pry them out with both fingers. Has anyone else had this experience with this gun or another? If so is it just a quirk of the gun, wrong type of ammo, or did I get handicapped magazines?

I see. Thought you might be one of those folks who unload their mags every time they come home, for fear the springs would set. Definitely understand shooting FMJ versus the expensive stuff.

Sounds like some really stiff springs... may've been replaced with extra power models at some time or other?

As for pushing up on the round to get it out the mag... odd. Sounds like a bad magazine design/maybe a messed up follower. Have you cleaned the mags lately?

Also... does that Smith have a DA/SA trigger?

I'm thinking it is a bad magazine design. The trigger is DAO in the sense of it cannot be decocked without dropping mag, racking the slide to remove chambered round, and the trigger must be pulled. I doesn't seem to cause a problem while firing but I haven't had the opportunity (aka money) to shoot too many gold dots through it. It's just frusterating as hell to unload. I clean the mags regularly too. Who knows!

well

Me thinks that he is speaking of the one in his sig line.

They are probably hard to get out because you are not stripping the rounds from the mag the same way that the gun does. As long as the gun feeds fine and you have no FTF's, I wouldn't worry about it.

So, even if you..

...

My Colt Defender's, and my Sig P220's, single-stack mags are hard to unload if maxed out but, I find by simply pushing down on the casings (closest to the primer's) and, at the same time pushing it forward, with the same thumb, in one continuous motion, they come out. Maybe not as easy or smooth as double-stack mags, but they come out..

On both my M&P and my Sigma, the 3rd to last round will hang on the front of the mag as I'm unloading them, thumb pushing on the exposed section of the rim, skimming along the top. It's just the angle. On my Walther P22, the tenth round into the mag goes in stiff, but feeds just fine. Most guns have quirks. As long as it's not while firing it's not a problem, in my mind.
