The CPO Sigs are one of the best deals in the gun industry IMO. They been doing this for awhile. I got my P220R for 600 at a local shop. Sure it's used, but shoots just as good as any other P220.. It comes with a 1yr warranty, case, lock, mags, etc.. The same shop sells new P220R's for $850.

EDIT: Sig doesnt try to pass these off as "new" .. they're clearly marked as Pre-Owned. They come in a red case (instead of the normal sig blue case) and the new CPOs have a red (used to be blue) tamperproof band around the grip so you know it's been back to the Sig factory and reconditioned.

yeah I got a gently used CPO SIG 229 for a song. It's become my favorite!

The place that I work deals with a lot of refurbed products. From my experiance they are a better deal than new. A refurbed product goes under the scrutiny of many more eyes, and is attended to by the "best of the bunch" as far as technicians...assembly... and the like. The product goes through 3 times the check that a new product does. You are far less likely to encounter a "lemon" refurb than you are a "lemon" truly new product. Since I have learned about this, I have bought several high dollar electronics "refurbed" and have had nothing but good luck with them. They also normaly cary a full warrenty too. Refurbs are a good thing to look into when available.

Who needs it? It's a Sig.

My purchased-in-1980 Browning BDA .45 (Sig) has had thousands of dollars of ammo put through it (sigh) and still keeps on ticking like the day it was new.

Warranty? We don' need no stinkin' warranties!

Where'd they get them, is what I want to know...

The issue is not their quality or price, but being sold as 'new.'

Hopefully that's just miscommunication between the main warehouse/HQ and individual stores (or between department managers and clerks).

Kahr does this as well. Not sold as new, but "Factory Reconditioned" and includes like new warranty.

Trade-ins. HK, Glock, SIG, Smith & Wesson and others with big police and military contracts do it all the time. Police departments only keep their guns for a set period of time before replacing them. When SIG bids on the contract to replace thousands of pistols (which is common with large police departments), they offer a discount on the new pistols in exchange for getting the old ones back. Or, when they sell them in the first place, they guaranty a buy-back price. Either way, they get a lot of pistols back that are in the proverbial "carried a lot; shot a little" condition. They tend to have holster wear but are mechanically excellent and perfectly safe to shoot. Some manufacturers will just sell of the trade-ins. CDNN usually has lots of S&W and Glock police trade-ins, for example. H&K recently released hundreds, if not thousands, of police trade-in P7-PSP's. SIG is going one extra step and performing elaborate inspections and, if necessary, some reconditioning, and backing them with a factory warranty. Either way, it's a good way to buy an excellent firearm at far less than the retail price of a new one.

I picked up a CPO West German Sig P220 last week for $525.00+tax=$567.53. It was a dealer demo that is in great shape.

Are they good for the price? How much lower are they?

I owned a CPO Sig for a little while - yeah, in most stores they're sold as they should be.

But in this case, it appears that Sportsman's Warehouse, in at least one location, aims to represent these reconditioned guns as 'new.' As I said, hopefully just a miscommunication between departments rather than company policy.

I bought a refurbished Glock 22 a few years back. I shot at least 2 or 3 thousand rounds from it with no issues.

I bought a CPO Sig 228 and whoever inspected it missed a badly damaged, bent extractor which caused multiple failures. Sig doesn't have an 800 number, so I had to wait on hold for up to 45 minutes each time to talk to someone. Even though it supposedly had a 1 year warranty, Sig's customer service refused to let me send the gun in. They insisted I just needed to lock the slide back for a few days to break the recoil spring in. Then they said it was the ammo (even though I told them it happened with every brand I used and that there is clearly something wrong with the extractor). They finally agreed to send me a free extractor after lots of arguing. I had to pay to have it installed by a local armorer. So, Sig certainly can put out bad CPOs, and the warranty is useless in my experience. But, now that it's fixed, the 228 works great.

I just helped my friend figure out which CPO 226 to purchase at our local store here in Bismarck. The store just dropped the prices to $449 on these. The pistol he bought showed very little wear except on the barrel. The trigger was classically SIG smooth in DA and very crisp in SA. They've got two others at this price, one is a '99 and the other (with a much better trigger) was made in '97. Great Deals!

Sounds to me like that clerk thought or assumed they were being sold as new and did not understand the CPO program.

+1 Meef I have a west german (1984 maunfacture) SIG P220 .45 it was a PD trade. Who know how many the PD put through it but I have put ~ 1000 rounds through it myself...not one single ftf/fte and its ALOT more accurate than I am
