Just put one on lay-away it looked and felt so good.

I don't see it on the Taurus site and can find very little googling. Generally, what's the reputation of the gun, and specifically, what does the CS stand for?

Its's very close to the Beretta Brigadier, with the typical Taurus improvements (safety on the frame, more robust internals). In the single reference I could find on the internet, it's supposedly a little shorter than the Beretta, though I can't see it. It does have a rail. This one is polished stainless and is quite hansom.

Sounds like the pt92. Saw a pick it looked like the pt92. In which case your headed down a pleasent road. Could you mean the pt911 which went out of production and is a cool shorter looking pt-92 with a slightly squared slide? I'm just wondering.

From I have been able to find it is basically an enclosed slide PT92.
It is not a current model as far as I can tell.
Anyone else have any more info?

Edit: The tiny picture I was looking at made it appear the 917 was enclosed slide, but it is not.

It's not a 911 - being a fan of the Taurus line, I read the side of the slide several times, not recognizing it myself. PT917 CS. BTW, where did you see the picture? You've found more information than I have. As I remember, it may have a somewhat squarish cross-section.

As to it being similar to the PT92, I agree - and I anticipate no problems with it. Mechanically it looks and feels wonderful.

The PT917 is essentially a PT92 with a slightly shorter barrel that fits flush with the end of the slide... I forget which Berettas were like this... D models?

Called Taurus and here's the deal:

the 917 CS is a NEW model (Taurus web site is a mistake they are getting corrected) - called the "Compact Plus", the C stands for "compact", the S stands for "ambi-safety". It's basically the Taurus P92 with a shorter barrel. An interesting thing is that the overall length is 8.5", equal to the P92 (which has a 5" barrel).

Decided that I couldn't stand to wait - bought it out of lay-away and here it is:

No. Weather has gone to pot here. I'll report once I have. Photography is about all I can do right now.

Update: Well, it wasn't a target shoot, but I went out in the pasture and gave a hillside heck... Only had time for one 17-round magazine, but shooting re-manufactured FMJ (Ultramax) it was easy to control, sweet trigger and no failures of any kind.

Sorry for ever doubting you. I really like it. I mean really. If you don't mind what it run you, Please!

Beautiful

Hey RCellis,

Congratulations on the PT917 - that's a fine looking weapon. I'm a proud owner of a PT99 & noticed the magazines are interchangeable between the 917 & 99. I also have an extended 20 round magazine, but it's kind of balky looking - as opposed to the more aesthetically pleasing 20round mag shown in your picture. Where did you pick that mag up?

PS - the profile of the PT917 is making me green with envy!

The 20-round mag came with the pistol. I presume you can buy them from Taurus, though I'm not sure they will fit a PT99 - you should ask.

BTW, what about the profile attracts your attention?

Here's my PT99

The differences are subtle. With mine the barrel & slide jut out past the frame. It looks a little awkward imo, as the bottom is squared off (mount) while the top is rounded (barrel). Your 917 is more 'uniformly square', thanks to the more compact design.

The differences between the clips aren't huge, but I like the way yours sits flush with the base of the grip. Mine has kind of an UZI look to it, which is cool in its own right - just not my preference.

Anyhow, they're both handsome, reliable 9s

I just bought the 917 about 3 months ago. I bought it because I have a pt92 that is 20 years old and with the exception of the trigger bar being replaced.(after thousands of rounds being fired) I have had little trouble with it. On top of being a great looking firearm it has operated perfectly. I have run factory and reloads through it with no missfires. I recently used it in an ipsc match and it worked great. My problem is finding a good competition holster for it. Any suggestions?

Taurus PT917 is similar....

... to the now discontinued Beretta 92 and 96 Centurian. The Centurian was a full size frame(in the grip area, but shorter dust cover area), but a shorter barrel of 4.3" in length.

For competition, the fact that the PT917 has a rail arrangement on the dust cover will limit the available holster selections. I'd look at holsters that fit the Beretta Vertec, 92G-SD or late model M9(with rail).

Thanks for the info. Something I learned about the 20 rnd mag that comes with the 917 is that it will not work in my older pt92. Don't know why but it will not feed correctly and sometimes not at all. The 17 rounder that came with the gun works fine in the 92. Also I have not had any trouble with the older mags working in the 917. Go fugure.

Don't forget about Finger Groves, cause I recently purchase the 917. The 917 has the same body frame as 99s and 92s, plus all excepts each other's magazines. :D:D:D:D
