IED-resistent vehicles? Either the powers-that-be aren't telling us something that they should be telling us, or someone has way too much time and money on their hands.

Actually,Modesto is/was one of the fastest growing city's in the bay area.
It had(I don't know about now) cheap housing.Commuters from S.F.,San
Jose and all over the bay area were/are flocking there.
I know they have a huge gang/illegal population,but come on,a bomb
proof truck?

How many members of the current U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan are "former" gang members, who still retain some affection for their old loyalty groups? We've seen full blown police officers in Los Angeles who have retained their ties. It's not impossible to think that there are people in the Army with similar hometown loyalties. And now they have experience with IEDs. It's certainly a tool I can see as being useful to the gang warfare arsenal.

They obviously took a cue from the Boston PD and are preparing for a Mooninite invasion.

true, everything within a 200 miles (or more) is the "Bay Area", at least the Chambers of Commerce think so.

It's a hick town with money left over in the budget. What are they going to do? Send it back? If a policicrat sends money back, then it is very hard to justify a budget increase next year. Thus, they buy goofy toys to play with.

and if the fact that they can spare a few officers for a road trip to and from Boston to "save" 10 grand is any indication, I don't think they will have to bust this thing out all that often.

assuming only 2 officers went on the 3000 mi trip:

$1300 2 one way airline tickets to Boston

$1700 for 600gal diesel fuel (assuming full size armored car like 5mi/gal )

$400 5 days worth of hotels

$250 in meals under "travel expenses"

$100 in "other" travel expenses (laundry, maps and so on)

$150 pair of Red Sox tickets, some peanuts and a couple suds (hey, afterall, how often do modesto cops get out to Fenway)

$1500 in premature vehicle scheduled maintenence

$1250 in overtime to cover gaps in shift

$2000 in pay for 1 week wages not spent "serving and protecting"

saving taxpayers $1550 in the delivery costs of a $100,000 truck Priceless.

Just out of curiosity how do you use those gun ports? Start firing and walk your shots in? That's an awesome tactic in residential areas.

That's a good point, but aren't the majority of the IED's the troops are facing constructed from Soviet-era bombs that apparently are pretty plentiful in the sandbox? AFAIK they are a little harder to come by stateside, and we don't seem to have outright attacks and ambushes on the police or other gangs besides your occasional drive-by (convoys?)

Demand creates supply. Just ask any economist. The interesting thing here is that they have not needed this thing yet...

I don't think the issue is gang-bangers either, whatever the police may say. Gangs don't target police out of hand. They are targets of opportuinty and certainly if they get in the way or cross them on a back room deal but generally they leave the police alone because the police will kill them if they get the chance.
