Does anyone know what the requirements for CCW are in New Orleans these days? I had heard that New Orleans requires a special city permit to carry in city limits regardless of state CHL or reciprocity. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Bullflop.

That's what I thought. I have an acquaintance who is a security guard there, and he told me this. But I think the rules for civilian CCW and Security CCW are different, so perhaps he was referring to security guard rules.

just an LA. ccw or one from a recognized state.

Yep. That's all you need.

There is no CITY CCW.

This is one of those quirky Louisiana things, but there *IS* actually a Parish (County) CCW. It's called a '.1' licence and can be issued by the sheriff. The state licence is a '.3' licence (which refers to the statute). You do not need a .1 if you have a .3 or any permit recognized reciprocally.

Speaking of Louisiana....

Heading to an LSU game in a few weeks.

I know I can't carry into Tiger Stadium - that's fine. What's the law on leaving it locked in the car? I haven't been able to decipher the law at handgunlaw.us

Thanks for the help.

LSU Campus is a gun free zone. I doubt you will have any issues by leaving it in your car. Just don't wave around the tailgate ;)!

Criminal empowerment zone. Don't leave a firearm locked in your car if you have any NRA stickers or anything inside that resemble shooting equipment, visible from the outside. Leave a nice Greenpeace shirt inside, or an empty box of Tofu.

The right party to ask about gun laws: The Attorney General's office.

BAD party to ask about gun laws: A cop. (While good cops DO know the law, ask nine, and you will get nine different answers.)

A step below a cop: A security guard in a town you couldn't pay me to enter at this time, armed or otherwise.

It's shortsighted to view the high murder rate in New Orleans as bad. According to Mayor C. Ray Nagin it's part of the city's branding:

“Do I worry about it? Somewhat, it’s not good for us, but it also keeps the New Orleans brand out there, and it keeps people thinking about our needs and what we need to bring this community back. So, it is kind of a two-edged sword”

You may remember that Mayor Nagin ordered his New Orleans police chief to confiscate the guns being used by law abiding citizens to protect their lives during the Katrina disaster in 2005. The city still has not returned most of those guns despite a law suit by the NRA (the organization that some gun owners call "the biggest gun control organization in the world") and the Second Amendment Foundation.

The only people in New Orleans stupider than Mayor Nagin are the people who vote for him and, alas, the people who put money into his city or visit it. Without them Nagin would be the biggest idiot in New Orleans.
