I'll be picking up a Savage 10fp in .223 soon, and me not being a rifle guy, I'm at a loss as to what kind of scope I should get.
I'll be using it just for target shooting, and I'd like the scope easily adjusted to cover from 100 yards out to 500 yards. I'm really not the kind of guy that wants to go drop a huge amount of money on a piece of optics, so upper limit will have to be $300. What do you guys recommend?

Get a Burris or maybe even a Nikon. Just look around at websites and find something in your range. Maybe Leupold as well if you can find one cheap enough.

Also, slightly lower quality but still excellent for the money is Millet.

Thanks, I just looked up Millet. The Millett TRS-1 4-16X50 Illuminated Mil Dot looks like it will fit the bill very nicely. Only $280 too.

All I can say is do not skimp.

I would get nothing less than a Leupold VX-II, Bushnell Elite 4200, Nikon Monarch, Burris Fullfield II, Weaver V-24, or Weaver GS 6.5-20

I have a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40mm on my 223 $415. and a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40mm on my 308 $431. It is amazing what good glass will do for you.

If you could find a Weaver KT-15 they are great scopes as well. You can pick them up used for around $200. they are a stright 15x but are made with great glass.

Best optics buys for under $300:

Fixed magnification - 10x Super Sniper $299

Adjustable magnification - 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite 4200 $260

The Millett TRS-1 4-16X50 Illuminated Mil Dot is a whole lot of scope for the money. It comes with Millett's lifetime replacement warranty. Sniper Central did a review on this scope. Millett has made few changes after the SC review and it is an even better scope now. It has 100 moa total vertical adjustment and very clear glass for the money.

Leupold, Nikon, Burris, Sightron

Best bang for your buck may be the Nikon Buckmaster at around $200.

I have two super snipers, a 10x on my 24 inch AR and a 16x I am going to mount on my bohica when it shows up. I think they are great for the money and seem to hold up really well.

natchezss.com has the refurbished Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 Matte w/ Mildot reticle for $219.95.

Item # F10NK6469BR.

The same thing new is $289.95. Item # F10NK6469.

My wife gave me this scope. I haven't put it on the M1A, though.

A buddy has this scope on two rifles and loves it.
