I posted in another thread about getting a Savage 10FP-LE1A in .223 Rem. I put a Simmons 3-9x40 scope on it because its what I had available. This scope did fine for me today out shooting this rifle for the first time. But IF I were to get something else for it, is there a recommendation you would make for me to consider? I hear alot about Leupolds. I don't want anything too high dollar either, like around $300 or less if possible.

In the same thought, what scope would you recommend for a .22 LR bolt action rifle. I'm thinking about picking up a Kimber Classic or maybe even a Cooper. :)

I like the Nikon Monarch 6x42 in that price range or the Kahles 6x42 as a step or two up. For both I like the Burris signature rings and mounts with the plastic inserts. The Burris website has a good application chart. Note that different models of the 10FP require different model number hardware. Burris customer service is very competent at helping to decide among a few different options.
There's endless choices, but I like mine as simple as possible.

If you're shooting in mid-day, a lens larger than 40mm doesn't do a lot for you. If you adjust your scope for different ranges during a session of shooting, repeatability of adjustments is important. Magnification? If you go too high, heat shimmer and mirage from the barrel can become a factor.

That Simmons 3x9 would do just fine on a quality .22...

I almost went with the Savage 110FP in .308 for my first rifle, based on an article in Guns&Weapons for Law Enforcement.
I let the experts talk me out of it...had I not, I would've been shooting a LOT sooner!
I think you've got a good rifle there.

In the article, they hooked up a Weaver scope and used Weaver rings/base(s) and had a very accurate set-up.
You might consider using the Weaver optics/mounting system.
The price range is about right, and the quality of the system would be pretty darn good, too.
Good luck.

I have a Weaver V16 - it is a 4X-16X with a 42mm objective lens and parallax adjustments all the way down to 30ft , yes 30 feet! So it would work well on either rimfire or centerfire. Mine is going on a custom 10/22. The Weaver can be bought for less than $300.

I've said it before. I think the best scope available at a reasonable price is a Bushness Elite 4200 in whatever magnification you desire. A good cheaper alternative is the Weaver Grand Slam or for slightly less money, a Swift. I like Weaver and Swift for lower dollar scopes and have had zero difficulties with either.

i have a Sightron SII 6-24x42 mil-dot on my 10FP. i originally had a duplex on it, but moved that to my AR. has nice features target knobs, sunshade and A/O. i like the Luepolds, but for my uses and the features that i wanted, the Sightron fit my price range. i've read a bunch of good things about them, before i actually bought it. also if you some how damage the scope, be it your fault or quality, you can take it to the dealer and trade it out without having to send it into the factory. The dealer that i bought it from (www.snakerun.com) at a gun show (as well as another dealer) told me this.

Ditto. Everybit as good as the Vari-XIII and for a lot less money (and yes I've owned both).

Between a Cooper and a Kimber, I'd go Cooper. I own a Model 36 and a recently acquired Classic .22. The Kimber is very nice but the Cooper shoots better. You might also consider a Sako Finnfire or one of the many Anschutz models.

Another vote for the Bushnell Elite 4200. If that's too much $$, the Bushnell Elite 3200 is a perfectly good downsize.

I have the Bushnell Elite 3200 with Burris rings and Weaver bases, on my Savage 10FP in .308 and it works good for me.
