I'm looking for a scope for my new Ar-10. I would like it to be able to reach out to 800 yards max and the price of the scope to be under 400 dollars. What do you guys recommend?

The two I have been looking at so far are the Nikon monarch and the vortex.

Any reason to go with one over the other.

Look at the SWFA SS series. Built like tanks, excellent tracking, good glass, and the new MIL-Quad reticle is really nice. The fixed power models are right at $399. And SWFA has great customer service, and their warranty is for life and fully transferable. I have the 3-15X42 on my precision rifle, and I love it, and I'm an IOR fan, so that should tell you something.

Should also note I don't want a fixed scope (have one) or a 3x9 (have one)

Looking for scopes in the 3-15/ 4-16 magnification range. If there is a 2-14 that's also something I would also consider.

nothing bad the say about monarch, except internal adjustment range is low. I am saving up a little for a vortex PST 4-16x50, they come with a moa based reticle and moa adjustments and 75 moa of travel. It runs $699

The hs-t is cheaper, or the viper hs

The performance of a 3-15/4-20x selling for $400 new is going to be rather disappointing, particularly at 800 yards. If all I had were $400 for an optic, I'd look for a good used 3.5-10 bare bones Leupold

Larger caliber semi autos have two recoil pulses that act upon the scope.

The initial recoil from discharge and the opposite action when the bolt and BCC slams forward.

Maybe save a couple hundred bucks more and buy a higher grade Leupold.

Putting a cheap scope on a nice AR-10 is like putting a 4 cylinder engine in a Corvette.

Vortex should have a great warranty, nikons customer service is awful. Had a prostaff fail on me, after the first try at their customer service, I was beyond pissed of, took a while to fight them and get it replaced. They lost a customer for good that day. Best of luck, my vote is vortex.

Doesn't have to be New used is fine, but has to be under 400. Not that I couldn't spend more I just can't do it on a scope its more of a mental thing than a money thing.

I recently picked up a Vortex Viper 4x16HST for a new rifle.Cabelas had them on sale for $399. I'm very impressed with this scope I realize this is the top of your budget range, but worth every penny in my opinion.

DEFINITELY check out the SWFA SS fixed power scopes. They are insanely tough, very well built, and offer a huge adjustment range. SWFA also has great customer service with a no-BS lifetime warranty.

Check out this video for more info on their line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fe4l_CAthI

The standard version can be had for $299 + S/H. Get the MRAD version with Mil turrets and a Mil reticle. There really is no better option for your stated price range - these scopes are amazing.

Sure, the Leopolds may have slightly sharper/brighter glass and be a little lighter, but the SWFA SS scopes offer superior features (reticle, mil adjustments, mroe durable).

I own a 4-16x42 monarch mil-dot. I like it until it is low light. I wish it was a little better at gathering light. Other than that its been tough. It rides on the 4 wheeler and in the truck. Its been banged around and even dropped it once. Never lost zero.
