A recent thread mentioned the use of .38 (.38 Special?) ammo in a .357 lever action rifle. I've often heard it mentioned that substituting .38 for .357 is OK for a revolver. Is it really OK for the lever action?

Never had any problems out of my mod 92 Puma. Some rifles don't feed the shorter .38's very well.

Your Mileage Will Vary.....

SOME of those rifles have no problems, while some are as picky as a .22LR rifle on what they like/don't like.

Same caveat applies to the rifle/carbine as does to the revolver...if you shoot a bunch of .38Spl ammo in a .357Mag chambered gun, be SURE to clean the chamber area very well.

The cat's meow

My Marlin has never had a problem feeding .38's.

The kick out of the little carbine isn't bad even with Cor-Bon .357 hunting loads. You load that thing up with .38's, even +p, and recoil is fairly non-existant. It's a nice step up from .22 when introducing a new shooter to different guns.
