Well, I broke down and took my X-Mas bonus over to Gander Mountain and bought myself a Mosin-Nagant M44! :D

Gander had 5 of them on the rack. I went through them all and chose the one that i thought was in the best shaped and got it for $130 out the door. Granted, this is a bit high, but if I bought online after shipping and transfer it would be pretty close to the same price. Plus, this way I got to choose the exact rifle I wanted.

Needless to say, I can't wait for things to thaw out around here so I can hit the rifle range. :D:D

Congratulations on a fun rifle! You don't need to wait for the range to thaw out - the 44's muzzle flash will melt all the ice! Besides, shooting this particular rifle in the ice and snow is more authentic. :)

It helps if you can wear an earflap-hat and find a Bob Hoskin's lookin' guy to yell at you while you shoot, too. "The man in front shoots. The man behind follows. When man in front dies, the man behind takes gun and shoots."

I have an M44, and I like it. It's beaver-chewed, but it's fun.

You'll have fun with your M44. Make sure you wear a sweatshirt and a heavy coat, or get one of those slip on butt pads (that sounds so wierd when you say it) for it.

Get some soft point ammo for it if you're a hunter. You can take it deer hunting and it'll kill and roast the deer all in one step.

I'd get some light ball and some heavy ball ammo and try both to see which shoots better in your gun. Mine likes the light ball, but from what I've read, that can differ from one rifle to the next.

Thanks guys!

I'll get a pic as soon as I have it. Stupid waiting period....

I'm going to grab it Weds night. I bought a Beretta 92FS the same day so I'll grab them both at the same time. :)

My brother and I decided we are going to play Enemy At The Gates in my backyard.

So one guy gets the rifle and the other guy runs after him until he gets killed?

Actually one I've always wanted to try is to have one shooter on the line with a Mauser the other with a Mosin, then set targets out further and further with each cease fire. The one who can get the best scores the furthest out wins. And no resting on the bench! Military stances only.

then you have to switch shooters and do it all over again.

Don't forget, if you use surplus ammo you have to rinse the bore and breech face with windex after shooting. I shot some surplus from my 91/30 and I forgot to hit the breech face, and now I have a lovely little ring around the firing pin hole. Not other damage, just a little ring.

Enjoy.

Uh oh, I would make a visit to the free health clinic. Cause' I think somebody got the Mosin bug. Have you been seeing Cosmoline or a crusty Russian?

I never found the Windex to be necessary. Hot water and a normal cleaning, and I've never had a rust problem. *shrug*

Watch out! Next thing you know, that M44 will turn into multiple mosins of different varieties. Have fun with it, its a blast (excuse the pun :D).

I use M-pro spray religiously after shooting ball ammo. Some is worse than others, but it *will* rust your bore and the bolt face if you forget and leave it. The rust isn't the end of the world, but it makes future cleanups all the more important.

Man... I was at a gun show and I saw a crate of Russian M44s for $75 a piece.

I bought two. Up until that point, I had been collecting Lee-Enfields. I was hunting for a No4 or No5 to add to the No1 and Ishapore 2A that I already own. It's all over now that I've bought a Mosin. Overall, Mosins are in better shape for less money than any Enfield I've seen, and 7.62x54R out of the short little M44 is truly a blast in every sense of the word.

Shoot it at night. You owe it to yourself.

i use a home made mix of water and ammonia.

cheaper than windex. just go to CVS/RiteAid/drug store and buy some amonia and mix it yourself. i dont know if ammonia actualy has any effect on corrosive salts but it is a copper solvent.

130 is not bad, IMHO, considering local taxes and regulatory fees. Most gun shops will charge you 50 bucks just to be the FFL who your primary dealer ships to. Then you add in at least 25 dollars for shipping... Heck, a 60 dollar gun becomes 135 after that... A 100 dollar gun becomes 175!

I've got a 91/30 that I shoot frequently. It's a nice gun and will shoot 1 MOA all day. Just took a little work to get it working right. Far too many people give up on their Mosin when it doesn't work to their liking on the first try. It may need some minor repair having sat in a box for the last 40+ years covered in liquid communism.

If you have problems, take it on over to the guys at surplusrifleforum.com, they'll help you get it fixed up. They did me, they're a stand up group of folks.

I now have 5 Mosins an M38, 2 M44's, and 2 M91/30's - one of witch is a replica PU Sniper! They are too inexpensive and fun!
