Well the wife took me to the new Gander Mountain for father's day. I was exited as they advertised 1500 new and used rifles.

The only appearent used rifle was an M1944 Izzy Mosin Nagant and they wanted (Spew warning) $179.50 for it.

Granted it looked faily decent metal wise, but come on. THere was a figure after the date which I assumed was some sort of a rebuild mark.

I had not seen brass end covers on the upper handguard of an M44 before. Are those common?

In Texas there 149. In there Beaumont store also remember if you can find it cheaper locally Gander mt will match the price. But if you find a place cheaper then I WOULD BUY THERE.

Gander was selling M44s for $99, but then they raised the price to $149. Not sure why, since my dealer sells them for $80, and I know that he gets them for around $68 from the distributor.

Oh, wait, I am sure why. Gander sucks. :neener:

yeah, give them 6 months; most of their stuff right now, is gonna be what ever they can get from those who don't know. they sell a nice mosin with the cammo stock here , in Houston, for `149.

I'm assuming the mark after the date was a cyrillic R. So the marking would look like 1944r more or less. The "r" is a shortened symbol for the word god more or less meaning year. Kind of like "the year of our lord 1944". A re arsenal mark usually is a rectangle or square with a line through it vertically.

Last year I spent $86 for a M44 and $96 for a 91/30. Both were in good shape although I did do a little work on the stock of the M44. Go to a gun show or a small dealer and you will get the same prices.

KBob, did you go to the Ocala store? Yeah, the only milsurps they had were high-priced Mosins. I also noticed that out of hundreds of longarms they had only six AR15s and no AKs. I guess they didn't want to ruin their sporting image, although the six ARs were pretty risque'

Its pretty much the same up here, the ARs are usually overpriced by about $200 as well.

ArchAngel, where in Pa. I pay a good penny for guns here in NEPA. Minimum for a 91/30 or a 44 is $150. Paid $180 for a hex 91/30. Don't have a C&R. I don't begrudge my dealer for making a profit. I appreciate him being there. I would like to get ahold of some of these cheaper prices I hear about, if for anything , to flesh out the collection a bit. I missed the Harrisburg show this weekend, but from what I hear, not too much to miss.

In the DFW area Gander had prime condition M44's for $129 so I got one. I have seen a lot of beaters at the local gun shows for about the same.

I have yet to see a good condition M44 for ~$100 in the DFW area but maybe Military Gun Supply might have them. That's a long drive for me though.

888,

Yep, they also had the SiG 556 and that US made AUG. I handled the SiG but the AUG was behind glass.

Guys, I know that is WAY too much for a M44, thus the Spew warning.

As for the commonality of brass fittings on the upper hand guard....the one I barrowed for a few months in 1971 had steel as does my current one. I have not noticed Brass on any at shows before so I wonder just how standard brass is compared to steel.

CHecked my reloading stuff yesterday and I do not seem to have a set of 7.62x54R dies....though there was a Lee case trimmer for that on hand. Anyone had anything other than great expereinces with a Lee die set in the caliber?

Ruger - that's the Gander I was just at this weekend. $149 for M44 was what they had posted on a sign. Did it go down after the weekend or something?
