This may seem like an odd question, but...

I'm considering buying another handgun or rifle tonight. This will be my 5th gun in a little over a month. Is there a limit to how many I can buy in a period of time. Will it affect my background check in anyway or anything like that??

Depends on where you live. Where you live..........it will probably get you on the Top 10 most wanted list. Where I live........it would probably get you invited on a nice hunt.

I don't know for sure, but I would guess at some level, state or Federal, it might raise some red flags. It might also depend on the type of guns you're buying; lots of high tech, high capacity mil-spec weapons, or an H&R Sidekick revolver and a NEF single shot shotgun.

Gentlemen, the feds get a call for the Brady check and they only want to hear one thing: "long gun" or "handgun".

They are not told you are buying a "phased plasma rifle in the 40w range" or any other descriptive.

Under federal law, you can buy 4 cases of rifles at once, you'll just have to add an extra sheet to your 4473 to list all of them.
Under federal law, if you buy more than one handgun per 7 days, the FFL you do business with has to fill out a special report and send it in. Again, this doesn't say "S&W Model 10" or "FN Five-Seven", it just says you purchased more than one handgun.

You guys need to learn the law and not make up FUD.

To the OP, your location of Chicago Illinois likely has far more restrictive laws at the state and local level. You should check your local libraries or consult a lawyer if you want factual info.

Can't be definitive for Crook County - I live in Kansas.

I can tell you that "multiples" aren't a problem for NICS. I've bought two at one time, and also three in a week, with no problems. Here in Kansas we don't have State, County or City purchase regulations to worry about for "legal" guns.......

Maybe they do things differently in Houston, but every instant check I've had called in, the dealer gives the gun manufacturer and the caliber, just as it's written on the form. According to the ATF website, in the case of someone purchasing a second handgun within 5 consectutive business days, from the same dealer, that dealer has to fill out a Form 3310.4 Report of Multiple Sale. The dealer then must send a copy to the appropiate ATF office, another copy to the State police or local police agency, and attach a copy to the 4473. I don't know about you, but that seems to be a bit of a paper trail there, not to mention reporting it to your local police dept. Maybe I'm just being a bit overly cautious these days, but I can't help but think that somewhere, some government agency is very interested in how many guns you're buying, how often you're buying them, what kind of guns you're buying, etc.

FWIW, I've had "spurts" of buying 5 handguns in as many days, from different dealers. IIRC I even bought 2 handguns in 1 day from different dealers, no extra paperwork or delays. No real intent to do such, but found things I wanted while making my "circuit".

babannockburn, if you'd give your state of residence, it might be helpful for others who share your Governor.

I described how it works in Texas, and I've never seen it done differently at any of the FFLs I have done business with.

The last form I filled out said something along the lines of Check one box:

Long gun Handgun Multiple guns

I bought 3 handguns in 2 weeks, at a Colorado gun shop. I had the same concerns and questions as PirateRadio so I asked the gun shop guy about it. I was told I can buy up to 3 guns in 24hrs on the same 4473, and though the make and model are obviously recorded, they are not a part of the BGC.

I have not heard of the one gun per 7 day restriction.

Brady check requires caliber, manufacturer and serial number.
If state law does not preclude buying multiple guns in a short period of time it is no problem.
I've bought rifles in lots of 10 from local shops and not had a problem, but they have to fill out extra paperwork. Don't know what it is.
I'm sure some clerk somewhere raised an eyebrow over buying 10 of the same make and model rifle, but it ain't my problem.
If all are single gun sales and don't violate state laws there is nothing any fed or state agency can do about it except call your local sheriff.
Me and my sheriff's on real good terms...

Brady check requires caliber, manufacturer and serial number.
But unless I'm mistaken that info has no bearing on the BGC. You're either approved or you're not, it makes no difference what you're buying.

Shouldn't this thread be in one of the general forums?

In my home state of Alabama, all thats required from a dealer is a multiple
transaction form that the customer never gets a look at; as its completed
by the admin staff in the office. Also, there is NO limit to the number of
weapons one person can purchase~!:)

FWIW, I have bought as many as five handguns in one day; but they were
all different makes/models.

Well, here in "Joke"land County, we have an assortment of LEO personnel that ranges from uninformed to unconcerned. When I take my pistol for registrations...oops...I mean "safety" inspection, I usually get the paranoid employee. She is a classic anti who fakes that she can't locate my name in the system while she summons-up her supervisor...who happens to collect 1911s. Then she barks at me that I have purchased X number of handguns to which I smile and say, "Is that all?! I thought I had more!" The supervisor looks at her like she is a fool (and she is) and he barks back at her "So?!?!" as he walks off in a huff.

My point? The world is full of brilliant people, some who respect the Constitution, and yet others who think that the constitution is a living document which is meant to be placed on life-support, and that it has a DNR order. If you want a new gun, buy it. It's nobody's danged business but yours. If they get upset, just tell them you know me. Well, wait a minute. Maybe that last part you can skip. :)

I've purchased 4 long guns and 8 handguns in the last 12 months in Arizona ,so far no housecalls from the BATFE

In the past year I've bought 21 guns, 5 handguns and 16 rifles:evil:

Some may say that's a short period of time, probably the govt would, to me its not. I think the most guns I bought in one month was 5 or 6, the rest were spread out over the rest of the year.

I wouldn't worry about buying lots of guns in a short period of time, at least I don't where I live. It may send up a flag if you buy a whole bunch in a day or even a week, but what can they do. As long as you're not breaking any laws then all the govt can do is wonder and waste their time like they do anyway.

Of course you do live in IL.....You have my condolences, but despite that State's gun control policies I think you are still pretty safe when it comes to how many guns your purchase. Still it is IL, I would certainly not put it past them to have some restrictions. To be on the safe side you should really consider moving to one of the free States:p

Some states have a one handgun a month law.

The Feds are interested in those that buy many handguns in a short period of time as they are looking for "straw" buyers.

In Arizona, if you have a carry permit you don't even need a Brady check. I'm not sure if the serial number is sent anywhere, at least not at the time of purchase.
