I'm REALLY tempted to get one of these babies. They look great for a simple HD gun for a regular Joe like me. That, and if it got stolen out of my apartment it wouldn't exactly be irreplacable.

Anyway, what's your story?

Safety is in the correct place for starters *wink*

They work.
Folks buy these for various reasons, and they flat work right out of the box.
Some removed nicer guns (Model 12, 870s, Ithaca 37s...) from Tractors, Barn, Farm/Ranch, guest house, cabin duty and bought these.

Now I did not grow up with Mossberg, never saw or heard of Mossberg in my parts, except for the pistol Mossberg did back in the day.

Duck Hunting and other hunting needs, decided to get some guns for guests, and farm/ranch kids to use.

Walked in, bought a few, went out without cleaning and they run...
Bought more, and then read instruction book and all.

So for the money, out of the box, these have worked in duck blinds in freezing rain and ice, busted doves, felled deer, and ridden in trucks, tractors and the like.

I mean unload, hit them with a air hose and dust fly everywhere, or use the garden hose, even power washer to clean [doesn't everybody do this?] .

Lube? Toss me the John Deere oil, that'll be fine...

Son-In-Law has one that works extreemly well with all loads. Easy to clean and and it gets smoother with each trip to the range. I am thinking about getting one myself.

Owned-n-operated a Maverick 88 since 1990. No problems. Put just as much game on the table as my brothers with their pricier shotguns.

Mine now does HomeLand Security service....Secures my Home and Land from no-good-niks.

They pattern as well as any gun, cost little, the action is smooth enough for quick follow-up shot, and they are tough little guns. If you love fine shotguns, buy them, but hunt with the 88!

I've used mine HARD for 11 years or so now. Never given me a bit of trouble. I'll buy another one just for the heck of it if I ever get around to it.

I prefer the 500A but to each his own. Won't bash you for your choice of firearm unless you show up in a southern duck blind with a Benelli Super Black... then its getting used as a paddle...

I bought one as my first shotgun until I filled some other needs and could get a nicer one. Well I never felt the need for a nicer one because this one did everything I have asked it to do without a problem. I love it. Great value.

Mav 88 is the "economy" grade M500. There are some differences and some parts don't interchange, such as the fore-ends. The butt stock is the same. IIRC some parts are of Mexican origin.

I prefer cross-bolt safeties very much, and don't like tang safeties, so I like the Mav 88 better than the M500/M590 for that reason alone.

For the price point, it's 99% of an M500 for about a 30% discount in price, and it has the (to me) much more desireable cross-bolt safety.

Had mine since 1995 and it's a great gun. Put a Hogue overmolded butt stock from a M500 on it.
