Why would I want one? I have breifly looked into it because I have read you can buy from whole salers ect at huge discounts. But I can not find any huge discounts on stuff. So why would I or any one else want one?

Main reason is being able to purchase C&R Firearms directly, without the need of a FFL to transfer to you. That right there saves $15-20 each gun.

Discounts aren't great, usually about 10%, but that adds up. Some places are better than others and a lot depends on the product. Many online dealers won't even let you see prices unless you have a C&R.

But it is being able to directly purchase the C&R's across state lines that is the biggest advantage.

The discount comes in the fact that without a C&R you must pay the FFL dealer to obtain the weapon for you. The prices posted in any magazine or newsletter are not for retail customers.

$200 dollar gun obtained with C&R costs you $200 and maybe shipping.

$200 dollar gun through without C&R costs you $200 maybe shipping, plus FFL fee of $20 - $50, plus state tax, where I live that is another $12.00.

Also, with a C&R the item is delivered directly to your door.

Discounts vary. Midway gives a good one on DPMS uppers. I have recovered the cost of my license in less than a year from Midway discounts.

I have had 2 dozen rifles and handguns delivered directly to my door during the past 2 years saving at least $600.00 in transfer fees, not to mention the time, cost and effort to drive to dealers to pick them up.
Also ,as others mentioned ,discounts on ammo and other accessories at Midway,J and G,Natchez and other outlets.
All this for a license thats costs $30.00 for three years.A bargain if there ever was one.

None if you live in NJ , I applied, the ATF agent that contacted me asked why I wanted it ,as NJ doesn't allow firearms to be delivered directly to your home.
He actually told me all it would do is bring unwanted attention so I rescinded the app and got a refund.

Just to add to the others, the discounts from dealers like MidwayUSA are not always huge, but they do add up. The real advantage is to be able to buy milsurps and have then delivered directly to you, saving yourself FFL transfer fees. It only takes a couple of purchases to recoup your investment. Of course, if you are not interested in milsurps, then maybe a C&R license isn't for you.

Yes, it is! Milsurps are only a small part of C&R firearms. I use mine for S&Ws, Colts and Rugers primarily. Remember, a C&R is anything (almost) over 50 years old. With the discounts (Brownells gives you one too) a C&R can be a lot of fun, but expensive. ;)

{1} C&R purchases are delivered to my home saving me from scheduling & making visits (Gas+Time) to my 01FFL buddy for $20/firearm transfer process.

{2} Brownell's, MidwayUSA and Numrich give me discounts on products.

Just a minor correction. A “C&R license” is a Federal Firearms License (FFL).

And you would need another FFL to do the transfer if you didn't have your own, in this case the Type 03 FFL.

By FFL I meant Type 01

It gets you on the Century Arms monthly specials email list. Good place to score surplus ammo with a flat shipping rate of $12.50. Shipping is free if you order over $500. NOBODY else is going to ship you ammo for that...

The family and I were on vacation last summer. I was checking prices around the internet and noticed that J&G, in Arizona, put the CZ-82 on sale. Since J&G has my C&R FFL on file, we swung in there on the way back to California. Cash & carry, in & out, in less than 10 minutes. Took a week for the grin to wear off me face.

Normal handgun purchase in CA is 45 minutes of paperwork and 10 days waiting to pick it up.

My first order with Brownells after I got my C&R came to about $300. I added up what the cost of all the stuff I bought would have been had I not had a C&R, and I found that I would have paid roughly $430 for the same things. Granted, I may not have bought a few of those things if I didn't have the discount, but even so, it more than paid for itself in just one order.

I've had 2 C&R rifles shipped to me, which is nice I guess, and I'm sure I'll buy some more one of these days. However, I use it mostly for the discounts from Brownells and Midway. Personally, I'd still probably get a C&R even if I lived in New Jersey. Even though you can't have them shipped to you, you could buy C&R handguns in other states (possibly, I'm not familiar with NJ law).

In my opinion, a C&R license has many advantages, and few (if any) disadvantages.

2 suggestions well meant....

1) Get that license.
2) Look around more diligently for those "discounts."

A C&R license will save one a chunk of cash. It's not so much the selling price which is reduced as much as it is the fees one doesn't pay. The first transfer fee you avoid paying pays for the cost of the license. After that, you gain.

Plus, it's nice to get home delivery.

Graf & Sons,Brownells, midway, and several more.I can save the cost of the license on one reloading supply order. jwr

Don't step in the BS. A C&R license will not save you one red cent. In all likelihood, it will make you broke.

I don't really do much internet ordering, but most of what I buy these days is C&R and it sure is nice to just cash and carry at the local shops/shows.

Don't even get hung up cost of the license and try to justify it; You can't fill the tank in a Honda Civic for less these days. And I seriously don't think anyone on this board couldn't crap $30 on a moments notice.

In keeping with MachIVshooter's theme...

I've said it before, and I suppose it bears repeating, a C&R is the most expensive $30 you'll ever spend. Being that I also own a Honda Civic, it is indeed more expensive to fill the tank once than it is for a three year ticket to the candy store.

my C&R has saved me so much money that at least a couple guys at Midway can now afford new boats.
