I'm thinking about putting a little mouse-trap spring around the trigger pivot pin on my 91/30 to stop the trigger from swinging freely. Has anyone done this? If so, did you set the trigger in the far forward position, like a striker fired auto trigger, or to the rear, like a standard rifle trigger?

I would prefer the rear position, sans slack, but wonder if it will give me any reset problems. I rather doubt it as the sear spring is quite stiff. I'll probably just try it and see what works best, but I would like to know what, if at all, others have tried. Stupid idea? Bubbafication? Any specific spring recommendations?

Thanks

Unscrew the trigger spring / sear.

Put some layers of masking tape under the rear.

Screw it back on.

Notice how much easier it is to pull the trigger?

Oh, I shimmed the spring, and it was a big improvement. Just looking to take it a step further. Does the bedding do much for accuracy? What did you use?

Thanks

I don't have good controlled experiments on the accuracy after glassing and pillar bedding. I also became a better handloader, a better shot, and only went to the range on windless days about the same time.

What does it all mean?
I have too many out of control variables.

75% of my guns I have never taken to the range.

That 91/30 has been to the range a half dozen times and went elk hunting.

Mosin trigger mod

fchavis, check out my mod to the Mosin trigger. You won't believe how well it works! Properly adjusted, you'll have a crisp, 100% creep free Mosin trigger. There will be slack at the first of the pull, but I find when I shoulder my rifle, the trigger falls back against the sear/spring so I don't even fell the slack. It's so easy, I executed it, took the pictures and wrote the article all in one night. Here's a link to the how-to "article":
2¢, No Creep, Adjustable Mosin Trigger

Regarding bedding, it does help. I used Devcon steel putty on my Mosin, but I also regularly use AcraGlas Gel. Here's how my '39 Tula did after bedding (All 100 yd groups, 5 or 6 shots per group):

Sorry I don't have any "before" pictures.
Good luck!

Whelen, looks pretty good. Seems to do a better job at what the shimmed triggers do. It is also much more finely and easily adjustable.

So far as a prototype I used the spring out of a ball-point pen. I cut it in half, straightened out the ends and bent them cloths-pin style. The spring is wrapped around the trigger pin, one end around the front of the trigger, the other hooked around the rear end of the sear spring. This holds the trigger to the rear.

This solution is a bit thrown together and the spring isn't very strong, but it works well and does not compromise trigger pull or modify the receiver. I'll see if I can get a picture up later.

The pen still works too.
