PASCO, Wash. (AP) - What happened to faking a cough? Sheriff's detectives in Franklin County said a man had his friend shoot him in the shoulder so he wouldn't have to go to work.

When he first spoke with deputies, Daniel Kuch, of Pasco, told them he'd been the victim of a drive-by shooting while he was out jogging Thursday. But detectives told KONA radio that Kuch later acknowledged that he asked his friend to shoot him so he could get some time off work and avoid an upcoming drug test.

The friend, Kurtis Johnson, of Burbank, has been arrested for investigation of reckless endangerment. Kuch was booked into the county jail and is expected to be charged with false reporting.

Detectives declined to say where Kuch works, or whether he still has a job. It wasn't known if he had obtained a lawyer.

Handgun: $400
Bullets: $20
Making national news for shooting yourself to avoid a drug test: Priceless

Believe me... I can sympathize. There have been some Monday mornings when I would gladly have taken a bullet rather than get out of bed.

Interesting story. I wonder why he admitted to what he really did if he was trying to get out of work? Some people fall to police interogation tactics too easily, if they even tried any on him.

I'm with GuyWithQuestions...the more interesting story might actually be how he gave himself up. Shooting ones self so as not to go to work is rediculous enough, but owning up to it is probably even worse. What an idiot.

Given the guys prior history of critical thinking, they probably wouldn't have had to try very hard. :)

My one time best buddy shot himself in the foot shortly after being told he had to be point on a meaningless Nam mission to capture a hill in 1971.He only had 15 days to go to rotate back to the States to complete his 13 month tour.USMC.
No one ever found out it wasn't a AD.A lot of residual guilt followed through the years. He told me about it in '84.Said no one else ever knew.
He died of a massive heart attack on New Years Day,1990.Age 41.Left a wife and 6 year old daughter.

So, which of these two face the more serious charges? the idiot who came up with the plan, or the idiot who agreed to go along with it?

"Uh, yeah, I can't come in today due to a shooting pain in my shoulder..."

Some guys - sheesh! Whatever happened to if you don't like your job, FIND A NEW ONE!

Here we go, one more reason for those who already hate guns to hate 'em even more.

What I get from it is that he wanted to avoid the drug test. Which means he probably would have lost his job when the results of the test were in.

So he's two kinds of idiot.

A shoulder wound, I could see that being pretty nasty. I would be curious the distance and weapon used.

I'd take one in the foot first....

Avoiding a drug test, he was lucky his buddy did not think he was a huge fricking spider and shoot him in the head instead.

Stupid is as stupid does. Here is a topper. Two guys were having a "who is more macho" contest. One took a chainsaw and cut off his hand. The other, not to be out-done, took the same saw, I think he was drinking, and cut his own head off. Unbelievable? - Check it out!

Based upon his choice of action, I have ZERO doubt as to whether or not he would have passed that drug test-- and considering his friend went along with it-- I have no doubt where he got them.

Funny. I used to work with a guy who did the same thing. Shot himself in the foot with a .22 by "accident" and drew long-term disability from RJR Tobacco.
Problem was that...after a year, he had to come back to work for one day in order to start the disability again, and he couldn't make it because...par for the course...the .22 slug had failed to go in a straight line, and instead got tangled up in all those little intricate bones that make up the human foot.

Several surgeries failed to correct the crooked bone regrowth, and an infection set in that shrugged off every antibiotic that they tried...and they wound up having to amputate the foot in order to keep newly-developed gangrene from spreading up his leg. He couldn't make the deadline for restarting his disability status...and lost his job. Even though the company provided HMO plan had to see him through the amputation and fitting of the prosthetic foot...a year and a day after it was done, he was on his own and had to deal with any further complications that arose. Last I heard, he'd sold his fine house, his cars, and his bass boat, and was living in a rented trailer.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave, and all that...

Hey I worked with a guy that shot himself in the hand on purpose to avoid overtime on Christmas. What a Jerk old close to retirement no kids or grand kids just all attitude of I dont want to work Christmas so I will spread hate and discontent to others. Oh yeah it was a nail gun.

Lest we forget the soldier who recently returned from Iraq who admitted he paid someone $500 to shoot him in the leg so he could avoid returning for another tour.

Tells you the power of guilt and shame.

Should be court martialed.
