Browsing GM today, saw a box of 300 Weatherby (magnum?) sitting on the shelf. With an alarm doodad strapped to it.

Now I don't know squat when it comes to rifle ammo, but the price tag said $120/20rds.

Someone care to educate me why one single cartridge should cost $6? Isn't that more than 50BMG?

One of the boxes was sans alarm, so I opened it and didn't notice any gold or silver bullets.

It's a proprietary magnum cartridge. There's far less brass and commercial loading equipment available for it than a standard military round like the .50 BMG. The cartridges were undoubtedly loaded with premium hunting bullets. Have you seen current prices for Federal Premium loadings of .300 Win Mag? Even that's over $50 a box now. Ammo is getting very expensive.

I have seen once fired .300 WM brass going for $1/piece... seven months ago. That is actually more than for .308 standard rounds complete.

Midway lists 470 Nitro at 302.99 for 20 rds and Norma 500 NE at 205.99 for 10 rds. This is Bill Gates type of stuff. Way out of my league.

Because there are rich city boy hunters that will pay that much to impress their friends. That's the real answer to your question.

People with a clue load their own.

It has been several years back, but I remember seeing some .257 Weatherby ammo that was over $60/20, and that was when even "Premium" .30-06/.308 ammo was still less than $20/20...Federal Gold Medal Match .30-06 was $18 at the high-priced joints.

There is a simple reason why its $120/20, because it says "WEATHERBY" on the box!!!:what:

I have one box of Remington .416 Magnum that I bought for a rifle I ended up trading off before shooting it. I saw recently the ammo is around $100/box.

Maybe you should find whoever ended up with that gun and make him a deal on the ammo!!

And I thought $525 for a case (500 rounds) of 300 WM Federal Gold Medal was expensive 5 years ago. That works out to $21 per box.
With today's prices you definitely have to reload.

This kind of stuff is why I will never buy a gun that is chambered in funny stuff, like .300WM. I don't want my dollar to round ratio to be more than 1. (today's dollars, of course. I know it'll go up)

We have a new GM that recentely opened up. Had to check it out. Their ammo and guns were way over priced. No need to go back. Walmart beats them every time.

Honestly I'm not sure what sort of bullet it had, except it was definitely soft point. Federal or some sort of major manufacturer.

those GM prices seem wildly out of line with other sources, but, those other sources are relevant to the cost of,say,338 lapua.

I'm not sure about all of them, but I know the GM here has a price match guarantee. Not sure if it applies to everything, all I know for sure is guns.

I saw .357 Sig for $1.15 / rd Federal Personal Defense and laughed all the way out the front door. The guy kept asking me what was so funny I simply pointed and went to Walmart. The next time I walked in the door it was marked down from $55 to $38. You cant tell me some people arent exploiting this.
