Can someone please tell me, what are the laws reguarding the carring of a loaded pistol WITHOUT CHL in the state of Kansas? My GF will be driving to Kansas this Wednesday. She was asking me if she could carry her pistol. I dont know the answer and I suck at looking up the laws. Those State web sites are difficult for me to navigate.

Thank You for your help

Kansas:Without a CHL,loaded firearms may be carried in plain view, glove compartment or vehicle storage compartment.Plain view includes passenger seat, dashboard,or holster that is visible to casual observation.
The KS courts have also indicated that firearms may be in console box.
Firearms may not be concealed on ones person.
Check:
http://www.handgunlaw.us
for info and reciprocity if she has a home state permit as MDeviney suggested.

I live in Kansas and by state law she would be ok but the problem
is in Kansas each little county or town you roll through has there
own ordinances. That is the main reason alot of people want there
CHL here. The most common ordinance is the gun and ammo have to
be seperate and not accessable to the driver. In Newton KS we had
to fight the city to get their gun laws removed when the police arrested
an 81 year old WWII vetran that had gone Turkey hunting in his hatchback
and had his shotgun and shells in the back. There technicaly in no trunk
on a hatchback and it is small enough they said he had access to it.
We asked the city council how do we go hunting in a pickup they could
not figure it out.

This is a bummer. What reallt sux is that she should be recieving her chl in the mail in a couple of weeks. However that will not do her any good on this trip.
Thanks for the info

Where is she driving from? She has to obey the laws in that state as well. In Oklahoma, the gun has to be unloaded and open view in the vehicle and cannot be carried openly at all outside the vehicle.

And yes, as stated above, Kansas has no state preemption, so it is up to local ordinance. Check out www.opencarry.org.

Also, look up FOPA (Firearms Owners Protection Act) and read that.

What city in Kansas is she going to?
