Today was, as many of you know, the first day of the National Empty Holster Protest on my campus and many campuses across the country. I'm hoping for more traffic here, but if the moderators need to move it to activism, so be it.

I thought it would be good to have a thread where students/faculty/staff could share their experiences and observations to get an idea of how things are going in regard to the cause.

Tomorrow I, my fellow Students for Concealed Carry on Campus members, and hopefully some intelligent passers-by, will sign a petition against our school's anti-self defense policy (or whatever you want to call it).

I wore a black Desantis Speed Scabbard today and nobody said a thing. I've open carried a couple of times, so this didn't suprise me, but I was ready for just about any response that came my way. We'll see how the rest of the week goes...

I hope everything remains peaceful and some fence-sitters, or people who have never given it any thought, think about their defenselessness. Good luck!

I have been wearing mine all day, granted I am only on campus about an hour and a half each day, which means that even as the Chapter Leader i am not puttin in alot of face time.

For the members of my chapter though, I havent heardf of any problems yet. Nor have I heard of any at LSU either, just talked with a few members from that chapter a few minutes ago reagrding our conceal carryon campus bill here in Louisiana.

I fully expect then when hte cops do manage to see me with my holster, I will be the recipient of alot of harrassment...but the cops already told me that I would be. :)

I wore mine all day, except when I went to the museum with my girlfriend.

I did get an interesting comment from a guy. I saw him looking at me weird while we were waiting outside a classroom for our prof to arrive. He asked, "So what is the pouch for?"

"It's an empy holster," I replied.
"That's what it looked like, I just wasn't sure though. Why are you wearing it?"

I went on to tell him about the SCCC, our cause, and why it was important. He told me he really agreed and planned on getting his license next year. He says he wanted it because during the summers he works for a firework company, running around the state of Texas and collecting cash from the various roadside stands. He says he wants protection when he's got that much cash on him.

He then told me that if he could carry on campus, he doesn't know if he'd do it all the time. He said, "Sometimes I don't even carry my wallet or my phone with me, so a four pound handgun would definantly be left occasionally."

I sincerely told him that not all pistols were 4 pounds. I informed him about the many companies that make guns just for CCW purposes. He's never heard of that before, so he was really interested in the fact that there were compact pistols on the market.

We then began talking about chemistry and the subject wasn't brought up again. But I think it went well.

There's no school rule or state law against CC at my college . I carry every day (unless I'm in scrubs) that I'm on campus. I personally think that's the best way I can support SCCC.
I will be in the student library most of the morning tommorrow W/ a FULL holster.

Gotta love Colorado

QUOTE : " I assume that is CSU treo? Colorado isn't ALL great."

Actually its a small junior college in Colorado Springs

QUOTE: "Namely Boulder and Denver."

Denver & the PRB aren't actually part of Colorado they are the eastern most cities in California

I'm in Nevada and a chapter just started at my school, but I didn't see anyone participating today, which I have to admit includes myself.
I'm not anti-social, it's just one of those things that can be uncomfortable to talk about, and I don't really have breaks in which to talk to people about it anyway.
I was thinking about printing out some pamphlets with FAQ's from the SCCC website to hand out to people who ask questions.
Maybe keep them in the empty holster.

Geacko, I totally understand.

I have the same philosophy for those who are thinking about open-carry, if you aren't proud of it and willing to tell others about it, I don't suggest it.

If one is looking to be left alone, openly carrying a handgun is not an effective strategy (anymore? :)).

Geacko, please do not put ANYTHING inside the holster.

The point is to display an empty holster, and also, many school officials and police/security groups are against our proposal to fix the problem. You do not want to be mistaken for having a non-empty holster at all....and again, the point is to display an empty hoslter

Also, if you are using a holster with a flap, keep the flap tied back so that the emptiness of the holster is plain to see.

Yes, I went and looked at the official posted rules when I went to copy stuff from the FAQ page.
I also don't know that the university has been officially notified of the protest by the local chapter, which is one of the rules.
I know they want the holster to be absolutely empty for the symbolism, but I think the same argument could be applied to putting pamphlets in it. You know, "They want me to defend myself with words" sort of thing.
I was kinda looking forward to wearing my gun belt though, an old western right that I use for my 1858.

Well, Geacko, as to if your schol officials where officially notified, notify them via email tonight. I notified mine via email sunday night, and have email records of conversations with them when they responded to it sunday night. :)

If you can't put pamphlets in it(I assume they are harmless pamphlets that don't shoot back)we are at the end of the road.
I will surrender.

I participated in the EHP today and was only asked about it by a fellow classmate who I sit next to everyday and am friendly with. She was admantly against CC on campus along with CC anywhere. I tried to talk some sense into her and gave her some information, but she wouldn't have it. I didn't push it to hard as I didn't want to offend her and prefer not to alienate my only friend in that class :D

I honestly didnt get any quistions today, but that is because I am normally outspoken about my beliefs. Most of hte people I talk with regularly were expecting me to come to clas with a holster on today. tomorrow I have my interview though, so will be around campus for a while. May get some quistions then.

Lurp,
Why is it that we as gun owners trying to exercise our rights are so worried about offending those who want to stop our rights. I'll almost guarantee she didn't think twice about offending you. Anti-gunners rarely do.
Being a gun owner, you are a minority on most campuses. You are caught in a hypocritcal world full of ranting liberals who only believe the constitution protects rights only as long as you beleive exactly as they do. If you tip toe around these liberals and don't exercise YOUR 1st ammendment rights then they will stomp on you. If you lose her as a friend, small loss. No one who is trying to take away your rights is truly a friend anyway. And she will try to take them away, every time she votes.

Amen.

Well she's not my ONLY friend, but only one I bother to associate with in that class.

tntwatt, I understand where your coming from and generally agree, but I'm also generally agree with the view that in certain situations you have to pick and choose your battles. I was discussing it with her before class began and we were the only two people in the room talking, making it awkward while you know everyone is listening in on your conversation. She never really got upset, but started to get a little emotional with it and I didn't feel like pressing the issue and having her make a scene. I have no problem telling people how it is when I'm with them one on one, but am not the type of person to start a scene in a classroom full of 20 other students. Take it as you will, but in the end we just agreed to disagree and went back to friendly conversation.

So far, no troubles at NCSU. I know of 7 or 8 people here who should definitely be participating (though one is sick with pneumonia), and I haven't heard of anyone having any problems. Personally, I'm a bit more self-conscious because of it, so I'm probably noticing people giving me odd looks more than usual, but no one's said anything. Heck, most don't even seem to notice. Good luck to everyone else!

SCCC is making a very peaceful protest, so I'm afraid it won't get noticed or get a lot of press coverage.

Get all violent and burn down an ROTC recruiting center and suddenly you are legitimized. It's sick.

I personally feel great wearing the holster around. I'd wear it for the rest of the year if I had to. The only thing that would make it better is if no one saw it, and it was not empty.

Second day of carrying, about to head to a lab practical. Get the word out guys, this is a peaceful protest, but it's hardly a silent one.

Hey does this go for public schools too? There are staff that would like to see CCW in schools!

This protest is not for primary/secondary schools, only university/college level schools where the students can realistically be of legal age to have a carry permit but are not allowed to carry due to law and/or school policy.

Well, we had a table by the student union today with a well-written letter to the administration awaiting signatures. By the time I signed it, there were at least a dozen others, but I think I had to skip a page, so it was possibly 30-40 signatures.

There were Rocky Mountain Gun Owners stickers, so I assume we have their support. They are a wonderful organization, much more determined than the NRA around here. Check them out: www.rmgo.org

There was a table next to ours in counter-protest. They had white T-shirts that they scribbled on. The message was inaccurate and misleading; "Against Guns on Campus? We are too!"

First of all, they're probably fine with police having guns on campus. Second, the only time people hear of "guns on campus" is when the people with those guns are doing illegal things.

Again, nobody mentioned my holster, so I was unable to spread the word, although those who were manning the table and surrounding area were asking passers-by for "support for the right to self-defense". I had a concert going on in the building, but came out when I could to see how things were going.

I'll contact our SCCC campus leader and see if I can get a update on how many signatures we got. Hopefully I can post that number tonight after work.
