Rancid;

Green River, huh? Ever get over to Wok Springs?

T'aint the caliber really, it's a combination of what's flingin' it & who's pullin' the fling lever.

Me and some buddies took a fella snipe huntin one night, and I can now see that I may need to go Moa hunting.

As with any animal, shot placement is key. A .22 to the head of a Moa would do the trick; but, since bird brains are smaller than my gun skills, I would opt for a shot in the vitals. Now feathers can be a little stiff, but the skin is thin and the bones are brittle, so I think anything above a .25 caliber would suffice. However, for long ranges (and believe me, those Moas can be awfully wary,) I would go with a 308 or 30.06 or a 270 at minimum.

If I was hunting with my handgun, although I fear a close encounter with one of those critters, I would definitely go with a .44 magnum at minimum if not a .454 Casull at least.

I know some will scoff at my choices and say their 22/06.08 Whizzbangknockemdead Supershortultramagnum (22/06.08Wbkd SSUM) will do the trick, but bigger bullets make bigger holes.

Do Moas taste like chicken?

It's a bird - I think I'd stick with birdshot.

Of course, since it's a really, really large bird, then my choice of birdshot would probably be that kind that only has room for about nine pellets in the shell...

birdshot?

you stick w/ birdshot on that beast you will most likley just stick in it's craw

IIRC the Moa was 10-12 ft and about 400lbs

I'd stick with any thing that would kill a deer.

I saw a turkey walk away from a blast of #7

the guy hit it low, his buddy dropped it with a .243, when they skinned/plucked the thing *none* of the birdshot made it past the feathers

(range was about 35 yards it was a 20ga)

Whatever the spear-wielding native with the handlebar mustache is doing near its butt, it has given this very stiff legged bird a very surprised expression.

Maybe since Oleg is an expert photographer, he would be able to tell us what type of camera they used to take this photo back in the stone age.

Brings to mind a Far Side Cartoon, two cops investigating the death of Big Bird on Sesame Street. "He was killed with bird shot...Big bird shot.":neener:

I think this should do the trick, with a bit of style:

Rancid;

Why Green River's right between Little Antarctica & Wok Springs. You should know that.

However, back to the subject at wing. Light bones, and a brain case that might contain a hard vacuum. I'm thinking something in the .25's with a bullet that opens fairly quickly.

Thanks. Probably more trouble than it was worth.

Hasn't anyone locked this thread yet?

I'm still blaming RancidSumo.

Well, as the Cheshire Cat said to Alice, "We're all mad here."

But otherwise, no, of course not.

I just think we're each blaming the other for this silly thread which is about to get locked.

But to recap our profound investigation into the Science of ballistics, we were discussing MOA guns. For those who came in late, this thread is the ugly-bastard-stepson of another thread, in which someone wondered what was meant by "MOA", and presumably "MOA guns".

This led naturally to the question, "What caliber for Moa?"

RancidSumo then started this thread, to pursue that burning question, (and blaming me!), which led to some spirited discussion of Moa-hunting.

I think John828 made some VERY good points. I suspect the brain is too small a target. I'd go for the vitals. Woerm correctly points out that those thick feathers will be hard to punch through, and no one wants to have to deal with an enraged Moa.

While the .308 or .270 would no doubt do the job, I want something fat and heavy that'll slam through those feathers and dump a lot of energy where it counts. Something like one of those heavy black powder cartridges from the Golden Age of the British Empire.

So that's why I vote for the .577-450 Martini. It's got the power, it's got the punch, and it's got the style I look for on my Cryptozoological Hunts.

By the way, I suspect they're mainly dark meat. Think big drumsticks. Probably taste a lot like Dodo.

I do not think this thread to be silly in the least. Discussing "what caliber for ________?" is incredibly important when the __________ is something abstract, mythological or totally bizarre.

When people get into 9mm vs. 45 ACP debates, or 223 or 338 Winchester for deer debates, they just but their brains in neutral and fall back on what they are already convinced about in their own minds and consciences.

BUT when we have a new object it forces us to think about external and terminal ballistics as it applies to this supposed object, and that cannot be done totally with the mind out of gear.

Therefore, our astute and wise moderators have allowed this thread to remain since it serves this purpose.

3...2...1...(what caliber for threads? Probably a political caliber)

Doggone it, that's the kind of stuff that gets a thread locked. This here is a gun discussion, my kind sir.

Yes, that'll do. A harpoon gun shooting modified custom XXXXLarge Gobbler Guillotines.

I am having second thoughts on a ballista though--it is kind of like a gun.

Maybe I was hasty.

Umm...but....moa are extinct.....

Anyway, to answer the question: I think .357 Mag. I like a challenge. Anyone can shoot it with a .30+ caliber - any .30-cal is gonna be MOmoa (see what I did there?) Stalking and shot placement would make it a challenge.

Next you're going to be telling us that zombies aren't real:rolleyes:

Don't try to confuse the issue with your so-called 'facts' and 'real-life', we know better than to listen to that stuff :D.

Zombies aren't real? Shame, good sir, shame. I shall forget you uttered those words.

I just failed to see how a snipe hunt related to a moa hunt.

But fear not, I rarely let "facts" and "truth" get in the way of..well, anything.
