The title says it all. I'm looking for something in ~ 9mm that is small, easily concealable, and importantly, fun to shoot. $500 or so (new) or so would be a bonus.
Maybe the Kahr MK9? I had a PM9, but I'd consider it too much of a firecracker to be fun. The vids I've seen of that Springfield EMP look like they're having fun.
The most fun I've had shooting a subcompact was actually a Beretta Bobcat 21A in .22LR.
I forgot about the G26. It's pushing the limits of "subcompact", but it's definitely easy to shoot, and can be converted to shoot rimfire. Good call, CountGlockula.
I don't have many rounds through it yet (hoping to fix that tomorrow), but I have a new Kel Tec PF-9. I am giving my P3AT to my future son in law, and upgraded. I can't believe how much easier it is for me to control the PF-9 over the P3AT. It comes right back down to the proper sight picture every time. I have to see what it is like for lots of rounds though, before I say it is fun to shoot. But it is great for concealed carry in my front pocket.
When I bought my PM9 I had a Hogue Handall slipon grip installed. Ran about $12 at the time. I found I could shoot +P and +P+ loads without pain, though the +P+ 's left my palm sore after about 30 rounds. Recoil tended to come straight back, so follow up shots were easy. Regular 9mm loads were a piece of cake. Great performance out of such a lightweight gun.
How about the Taurus Mil-Pro 111? I have a Mil-Pro 40 and it is an absolute joy to shoot, tames recoil, plenty accurate, feels great in my hand, good ergo's. Plus, Taurus is priced pretty good, you can probably get one for $375 out the door.
i have 2 of em myself and know of more. granted my sc's are in .40 and they are fun to shoot, and the same models in 9mm are even more fun to shoot. i have a k-40 kahr which is now my wifes, and i have a xd sc that is an accurate fun little gun.
also look into the glock 26 sc, light weight and 9mm, and with a perce grip extenstion they are g2g
