Tom, your show has a great following here a THR, and I hope I'm not out of line by posting your Truth Squad email on what's happening / happened to PDT and where we can find it.

Keep up the great work Sir. I thoroughly enjoy all of your efforts, TV, Pod cast, Internet.

Special Note to the Gun Talk Truth Squad
May 20, 2008
Personal Defense TV, Outdoor Channel, Misinformation and Spin
Several members of the Truth Squad have contacted me about the "news" that the Outdoor Channel has dropped Personal Defense TV. You'll note the quotation marks around the word "news" because the simple fact is that this is not what has happened.

Here's the skinny as it was told to me by a key participant.
Personal Defense TV is one of 10 television shows produced by Intermedia Outdoors (IMO). This is the company which publishes Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times, Petersen's Hunting, and a bunch of other magazines. IMO also purchased The Sportsman Channel about a year ago.

Over the last few months, IMO has been in negotiations with the Outdoor Channel (OC) about the shows IMO produces, and last Wednesday, according to my sources at IMO (and I get this from the very top), they hit the wall. Increased prices and unrealistic demands from OC made it impossible for IMO to continue. Wednesday night, a top IMO manager informed OC that the company would not be renewing any of its shows with Outdoor Channel. In other words, as each show's contract runs out, IMO was pulling its top-rated shows.

TV shows from IMO consistently rate in the top 10 shows on the network.
Up to this point, it was just corporate negotiation and decisions, which are usually out of sight of the public. Then it got ugly.

The Outdoor Channel then put out a news release which contained more than a suggestion that the channel actually was removing the award-winning Intermedia Outdoor shows (Guns & Ammo, Petersen's Hunting, In-Fisherman, Personal Defense TV, etc., etc.) to improve the quality of programming. In other words, it was dumping these crummy shows.

The reaction was quick, and interesting to watch. Jim Shepherd, a veteran television manager and creator of the Outdoor Wire and Shooting Wire (highly recommended) called BS on the OC release. At the NRA Annual Meetings in Louisville, KY, last weekend, people in the firearms industry saw through the spin. It was a case of "You didn't dump me. I'm dumping YOU," and everyone recognized it for the silliness it was.

PDTV is NOT Going Away
So, what now for Personal Defense TV and other shows? Not to worry. Clearly, they will appear on The Sportsman Channel. Now that IMO has cut the apron strings to OC, it can get about its work to increase the distribution of Sportsman Channel. Expect to see news releases on deals putting SC on cable systems around the country, and possibly on one or both of the satellite services. Click Here if you would like to contact your local network provider and request The Sportsman Channel (or visit www.thesportsmanchannel.com and click on "GET THE CHANNEL"). There's also the very real possibility that you'll see some IMO shows, including PDTV, on other networks (in addition to SC).

Personal Defense TV was my idea. It was tough to get the show on the air. Even gun makers were nervous about it at first. Because I knew what people wanted to talk about on Gun Talk Radio, though, I knew that personal defense is the number one topic -- period. Nothing else even comes close. I'm proud to be able to break ground with this show and it has been really well received.

We are almost finished shooting Season Three of PDTV, which will feature Massad Ayoob, Clint Smith, the world-class instructors at Gunsite, Tiger McKee of Shootrite (a new addition to PDTV), and a new weekly feature I think you'll enjoy. That begins airing in October. You'll see Heidi Smith and Il Ling New on the show this year, too. We bring the best instructors to you.
And...you didn't really think that after three years of bringing you the ground-breaking instruction on PDTV we were going to leave it at that, did you? Stay tuned for even more programs about the topics which you hear on "Tom Gresham's Gun Talk" radio show every week.

HUGE ATTABOYS!
Just as Gun Talk Radio was ground-breaking, and PDTV was ground-breaking, so, too, is the Gun Talk Truth Squad. You folks have really jumped on the "no shrug" policy, and you are sending letters to newspapers all over the country, and they are being printed.

Believe me when I tell you that this makes a difference. Just look at the comments made online at newspaper web sites whenever a Truth Squad member gets a "truth missile" printed. Others step forward with positive comments about firearms ownership, the common sense reality of protecting yourself and your family, and the need to protect (and take back) the Second Amendment.
Keep it up.
It's working!
It's not me. It's you. And YOU are getting it done.

No suprise. I noticed that DirecTV dropped the Outdoor Channel from their midrange package and I figured something was up with Outdoor Channel. They probably got greedy with DirecTV also and that's why they dropped them from that middle package.

What sucks is the Outdoor Channel was the whole reason I upgraded to the middle package.

I'd noticed over the last several weeks, PDTV had moved to the SC. We were recently "used" as a Nielsen TV research family. I made sure PDTV was listed. It was also the only show I made special comments about in the "comments" section of the books we had to fill out. Said I try to never miss it.

Keep 'em coming.

This is the only show that my wife and I would be tempted to turn on the tv and watch. Hurry up and release the dvd of the season so we can buy it and watch the show finely.

Seasons one and two are available on DVD. https://store.intermediaoutdoors.com/shop/Default.aspx

I have both seasons and they are extremely informative and entertaining. At $30 a season, it's a bargain. Especially when you consider Shooting USA is charging $10 an EPISODE! Not a real bargain there. Wonder how many they sell at those price? Probably not many.

Anyway I also saw a new dvd I hadn't seen before, Personal Defense TV Advanced Tactics. Unfortunately there is no info, so it's hard to tell if it's just select clips from Season 2 or if it is entirely new material. Hmmm.... may have to order it to find out.

That's pathetic. I would expect that from your standard liberal TV network but it's sad the Outdoor Network would stoop that low. The upside is that I can save a couple bucks a month now that I'll be dropping it from my DirecTV service.

The curiousity was killing me. I couldn't resist purchasing that new Personal Defense TV dvd. I hope it's not just a highlight reel!

Good to know; I'll stop checking my 'guide' on my cable for PDTV on the OC, great show by the way. I wonder what brought about the bad blood between IMO and OC? seems like PDTV and all the other programming was a huge draw for them.

DirecTV Outdoor Channel Preview Ended

I called DirecTV after Outdoor Channel was "dropped" I was informed that the "Free Preview Period for Outdoor Channel had ended. (I'd been watching it on the Total Choice+ Package for over a year) they told me I could get it back for only $2.99 per month or by signing up for the "Sports Package". Boy am I glad I told them they could put it were the sun don't shine!:neener:

Yeah, I had that same conversation with DirecTV. I was really pissed, but now I feel so much better! :)

I can't find the aforementioned Sportsman's Channel anywhere on there though. Anyone?

Unfortunately the Sportsman Channel is not available in our Time Warner cable region. And it looks like the other shows will not be either after the end of the current series. That is a pain.

Then what needs to be done - nicely - is to let our cable providers that we want the Sportsman's Channel to replace the ODC.

We need to tell our satellite provider WHY we dropped the ODC not just do it and say nothing.

We need to tell the ODC how upset we are about them dropping these programs we like. And let the ODC know you've signed up on satellite for the SC and that you've requested your cable company to replace the OC with the SC.

(Thanks to Toms tactics in the truth squad - what works for fighting gun free zones - will hopefully help support him directly.)

RTFM

I'd wondered why it wasn't on in awhile. Guess once the other series go away, I'll be saving a few bucks each month on my cable bill. Hopefully(but I doubt it) the Cable company might add the other channel to the lineup in place of OUtdoor channel.

The Personal Defense TV dvd called Advanced Tactics is just a highlight reel, segments that have already been shown. A huge disappointment. Don't waste your money if you have the season sets.

Love the show...

Tom,

Both my wife and I love the show and had missed it for a while until we found it again.:D Do have one suggestion, though. Loose the music when you're talking to someone. On a couple of the shhows, the music was so overpowering that I couldn't understand what was being said. :( Other than that, like I said - love it.

It seems like we'll be getting two Personal Defense shows soon. Michael Bane (host of Shooting Gallery) is beginning with a self-defense show on the Outdoor channel in January. Tom's show will be on the Sportsman's Channel. If we can only get the elusive Sportsman channel:mad:

so all of the Michael Bane shows will remain on Outdoor along with
probably the NRA shows? if so I cannot drop the OC but would like to know if DTV has the Channel the Tom is moving to. oddly enough
it was tom who let me know for 2.99 I could get the OC. I will not be willing to pay that twice . for both of them.

so all of the Michael Bane shows will remain on Outdoor along with
probably the NRA shows?

That's correct. It will be nice to be able to get both. I had previously inquired about the Sportsman channel since I like hunting too, but when I called they had not even heard of it at Comcast. It seems like it is a good channel but no one seems to carry it which presents a problem. On their website is says that they are available on C-band satellite. What the heck is that?
