I recently have moved and am subject to coming acroos far more threats. Not so much The 2 legged kind but 4 legged creatures because of that I have opted to carry FMJ ammunition in hopes of having more penetration. Or at least thats the theory. The usual suspects I come across are moose, bears(grizzly and black) among a few other dangerous but not so threatning creatures for the most part.Just curious if Im right in thinking and use of FMJ ammunition. If anyone has any suggestions on a better kind or round or suggestions on hot factory ball ammo please chime in.
Thanks,
Ron

I recommend a big bullet with a big flat nose going as fast as you can possibly drive it.

Sounds like you're carrying some kind of autopistol, though. In which case I recommend you avoid large aggressive animals.

I carry a .45 acp. I know saome of you are going to say that will never work but thats not what this is about. Ive heard of people knocking down attacking Grizzlies with a .38 Im also considering a 10MM which Is a proven cartridge.

I've heard of people dropping deer with a well-aimed .22 LR, and elephants with a .303 to the eye. Sure, it can be done. Do you really want to take the time to hit a charging grizzly or bull moose in the eye and pray that it drops him?

If your avowed purpose is defense from grizzlies and moose, start carrying something that is more suited to achieving that purpose.

I'd say a FMJ in the 230 +P range would do well for what you have. However, if grizzly bears are an real and constant presence, I would recommend getting something bigger. A 10mm auto is a good step, I know many people also recommend a 4" .44mag or better.

In the fictional case that you have a large predominance of Grizzly Bear, Moose, or Demonicly possessed Cows, all of the frequent Man Eating Variety, I'd recommend slinging a 30.06, 12ga with slugs, or better over your back at all times.

Anyone know who manufactures +p ball ammo sorry if its a dumb question I just havent ever seen it.

I think a .303 to the eye would drop any thing on this planet.

Well, it is obvious you have never heard of Big Foot.
LOL
Yes I have heard of that I infact have been packing a mixture of that and 230 gr. speer gold dot for a while untill recently. The Power ball just does not have the penetration needed from my experience the round does move fast but its light in weight and expands quickly therefore transfering its energy very quickly. It is a great round but I would only use it for a 2 legged BG. That is also why I mixed it in with the speer gold dot.

Uhh, dude! How many legs does sasquatch have?:neener:

Yeah, your right...It is light in weight and isn't going to penetrate far enough to dispatch a "moose, bears(grizzly and black)," but what .45 round is?

Sounds like a 10mm or a .44mag is in order...D*** the bad luck, you have to get a new firearm!:fire::cuss::banghead:

:p

I'm not an expert on killing bears, seeing as I've never actually had to deal with an aggressive bear before, nor is it a likely scenario.

But I would think .45 ACP +P would work on a bear? I've seen the ballistics data on some of these cartridges, and I have seen some .45 ACP +P rounds achieve greater kinetic energy than a .357 magnum round!

But, with the greater surface area on the impact point, it would likely have less penetration.

If you can run at least 37mph you should be ok. Don't laugh. You'd be amazed at how fast a person can run when being chased by a large animal. Otherwise get one of those mace type spray cans for bears only. I've read they are very effective.
Trying to shoot a handgun at a bear or moose while you're under a lot of stress the odds would be against you. And please don't forget that climbing a tree will not stop any bear from going up the tree after you. They can and will.

I think a .45 is fine if you want to carry a pistol. Are there better handguns for bears? Well that may depend on the situation. Same with ammo. For a given shot placement FMJ or HP may work better than the other. But, on a charging bear there is going to be some bit of luck involved. For true defensive purposes you should probably look at a 12 gauge or a larger bore rifle.

This thread is a joke, right? Please? If it is not, get some bear spray. Or a 12ga. pump shotgun with Brenneke slugs. And practice.
