Robert Levy, an American Hero

A tad over the top nicki, but yeah good on Levy.

He's definitely welcome to enjoy a frosty beverage on my deck any time.

I don't think it's "over the top" at all.

Robert Levy was the right guy, in the right place, at the right time, with the right motivation, doing the right thing.

We can never thank him enough for his quiet heroism.

He took a shot and won. Hardly the savior of the 2nd. I'd def buy him a beer if I ever met him, but things were going ok before he got involved anyway.

Robert Levy did what none of us had the money to do, take a pro-gun case all the way to the Supreme Court.

Robert Levy did what none of us has the time to do, devote LONG HOURS of patient preparation lining up all the necessary statements, briefs, testimony and plaintifs and bringing together the legal talent to make the case viable.

Robert Levy did what the NRA was incapable and/or unwilling to do, push this case all the way to the top and WIN.

Robert Levy did not have to do any of this. HIS gun rights were not in question (hey, if you're rich enough in this country you can pretty much do, say and have whatever you want). Robert Levy could have hired armed bodyguards to defend himself if necessary. He did not do this for himself, he did it for the country and for those who CANNOT hire bodyguards to defend them. He did it out of love for the Constitution and the loathing of those who preach the "collective right" doctrine.

I don't think it is going too far to say that Robert Levy has done as much for the American gun owner from sea to shining sea as we are likely to see a man do in our lifetimes. I for one am grateful for his contribution to our continued freedom.

No, I don't think that's at all "over the top". He deserves our gratitude. This was certainly no small feat and he is the mover and shaker behind it.

Oh and if you think things were "going ok" before this case was settled, then talk to someone who lives in NYC, Chicago, NJ or CA and ask them how "OK" things were going from their point of view. When your federal district court tells you that you DON'T have a right to keep and bear arms, that is means the NATIONAL GUARD, then see how "OK" you feel about it. Without that court acknowledging your right, how the hell are you supposed to challenge the goofy laws that keep getting passed in apparent defiance of the laws of common sense? You don't, plain and simple - and that is not "OK". At least now, all these folks have a chance if they will work for it - a chance to reclaim the heirloom of freedom that has been stolen from them.

Alan Gura also deserves a thanks and a pat on the back.

I hadn't realized he was the man behind the scenes, I only got wind of this case late in the game.
Does he head the CATO institute?
Why was the NRA against this?
Anyway, as a guy who has lived in the worst of places, I really appreciate this win.

He dedicated his intellect, labors, and fortune to the cause of liberty, and WON!!!!!!

I actually knew Bob for a short time when I worked at Cato, and am happy to report is also a really nice guy too. I was a lowly intern and he was always patient and generous with his time.

Hmmmm the Court hasn't heard a 2nd amendment case in how long???? and Levy isn't worthy of the highest praise

He's a hero, all right, and we, the people got lucky.

If anyone out there is a law student or a lawyer. Talk to your local Federalist Society Chapter and bring them in for a talk. The Federalist Society pays.

We brought Gura to Miami in November and he was Fantastic! I hope we can bring him back again.

We must remember that when the case was orginally started, many in our community were against it.

The NRA intially tried to derail the case in the early stages.

Five years ago, Alito was not on the court. His predecessor, O'Connor, was a moderate at best and would have severely jeopardized the 5-4 ruling we received.

Levy did a great job, but the NRA isn't the demon some would make them out to be.

I saw Bob Levy speak (on a not-quite-totally unrelated subject) during at law school, before I knew anything about Heller -- he's articulate, passionate, and a nice guy. (He was actually arguing against the draconian anti-smoking measure that Philadelphia has now enacted, against then-councilman, now-mayor Michael Nutter, then as now a droopy-lidded techocrat.)

It would be a cool thing for THR members to send him some sort of Thank You gift; he doesn't need money, but he might get a kick out of people recognizing the importance of what he's just seen through.

I'm not the one to organize it, but it anyone is, we could (for instance) get a nicely made plaque for him -- I'm in for a few bucks, if someone wants to figure out the details

I don't want to be the reason the man gets swamped with emails, but his email address is easily found. I dropped him and Gura both an email earlier thanking them for their work. If I can write anti's and politicians letters, the good guys deserve a pat on the back too.

Levy spoke at my gun society in law school. I had stayed in touch with him sinve then. He spoke at our club right after he filed Heller. I constantly emailed him during the time the NRA was trying to sink the ship. He is a great guy and a hell of a patriot for doing this.
