Well Known Liberal Blogger Shot In Washington, D.C.
By Greg Sargent - July 2, 2008, 3:33PM

Brian Beutler, a well-known progressive blogger, was shot and seriously injured during a mugging last night in Washington, D.C.

One bullet damaged Beutler's spleen, and he had it removed during surgery this morning at the Washington Hospital Center. He's expected to make a "pre-trauma" recovery, which is to say, a completely full recovery.

The shooting was confirmed to us by Tracy Van Slyke, the project director of the Media Consortium, a network of leading progressive news organizations (TPM is a member) for which Beutler is the Washington correspondent.

Some of the details of the incident are still sketchy. According to Van Slyke, Beutler was walking with a friend after leaving a bar in Washington's Adams Morgan section when the two were confronted by a man demanding their cell phones near 17th Street and Euclid Street.

It's unclear as yet what happened, but the man fired several shots at Beutler. One bullet hit him in the spleen and he was hit twice in the shoulder. A D.C. police official said he wasn't aware of any arrests made in connection with the shooting.

Beutler's companion called 9-11. After getting rushed to the hospital by ambulance, Beutler underwent surgery.

Beutler's family is with him now at the hospital, and his friends are anxiously keeping track of his recovery.

"He is currently in stable condition, awake and in pain," Van Slyke wrote in an email to colleagues. "But, true to form, he is already cracking jokes."

According to Van Slyke, Beutler was supposed to file a piece with the Consortium today. In his first words today to his editor, Adele Stan, he said dryly: "Sorry. I left you high and dry."

I wish him a complete recovery. Unfortunately, he'll likely attribute the incident to the gun as oppossed to the crook who used it, but that's to be expected.

What a shame. Too bad he couldn't shoot back - - - - yet. But then, being "progressive," he probably wouldn't. You know, "suffering for the truth" rather than standing up for the right. (Of course, I'm assuming he is anti-gun rights.)

Criminals will carry on regardless of the law. They are funny that way.

Heller's not even been out for a week, and look at this wave of handgun violence sweeping our nation's capitol. If the Supreme Court had not ruled that normal citizens have a right to own a gun, this criminal would've never been able to register his weapon.

It's a good thing he didn't have his own gun. The perp coulda took it away from him and shot him with his own gun.

Of course the Heller decision wouldn't have helped him anyway because it appears the RKBA is restricted to the home.

The Lord works in mysterious ways; and I shall not question them, but merely enjoy their splendor.

The ironic posts could continue for days about this incident.
Step up and offer yours.
Supplies are limited.Act now.

The gun was registered, so it was Heller's fault... right? :p

I hate to see things like this happen, but I can only feel so much pity for someone that supported the environment that no doubt contributed to his fate.

I actually think this is a fair statement. I mean, it's like they only gave us half the ammendment by the words "keep",,, what about "bear"??

I wish him well and a full recovery along with an opened mind and perspective.
Nobody should have to be confronted and shot. Perhaps it will give him a new view on things. It has been said we are who we are because of where we were when...

In the words of my dear friend and retired NYC Detective - "Liberals are only 1 mugging away from becoming conservatives"

I am sure this was just a misunderstanding and the BG only intended to kill him with one shot. This will surely strengthen his anti stance and somehow become GWB's fault.

I hope he recovers fully because it will be entertaining reading.

I was thinking the same thing.

It is a lose-lose situation with some of these folks. I would like to have hoped that this guy would now see the light, and understand why the rest of us are advocating gun rights for the law-abiding citizens of this nation. Yet, I'd be willing to bet that an incident like this will merely strengthen this guy's desire to have guns outlawed...

if only D.C. had strick gun control, then the criminals couldnt do this sort of thing.....look at how well it works in Schitcago...

Since the victim had just left a bar, even in states that permit CCW he may not have had a handgun on him.

um, all the states that border D.C. allow the carrying of a gun in a "bar" in one form or another....

I wonder if what this means is a group of wannabe reporters with blogs that no one reads.

I agree, this is a hoax or a publicity stunt. How can someone get shot by a handgun when there is a handgun ban?
kidding aside, I wish him a speedy recovery.
