So tonight was my first night living in Miami... and therefore my first night CCWing in the MIA as well. I am from a middle-upper middle class area and went to college in a kinda of southern, very college towny kind of place (Gainesville, FL) for those who are familiar. Go gators by the way! Anyway, I almost always CCW and I pay attention to what's going on around me, but only to a point. I always had a reasonable sense of security; like something COULD happen, but probably wouldn't. Tonight was different. I was at like Defcon-1. I'd say borderline paranoid, maybe even actually paranoid, but either way... an incredibly heightened sense of alertness and suspicion.

Does anybody live in a not so good area like Miami that would care to share any experiences/advice/whatever?

I live in a small city that is overrun with drugs and thugs. I am always on alert, I live in a not so good area as well... On a side note cbrgator, my sisters brother-n-law is the defensive coordinator for your precious Gators Football team.

I live in a large metropolitan city. I used to live in a section of town that my friends would not visit and, at that time, I did not own a weapon. A couple down the street had their home invaded and while tied up on the floor, one of the robbers used their ATM card down the street to steal from them. Also a block away from where I lived the local gun shop was held up. One of the perps told the other perp to take the owner to the back room and "do him". The perp could not figure out how to work the safety on the owners lifted pistol and the owner had a hidden weapon which he used to shoot and kill them both. There was a shoot out in the street two houses away once. I even had a bullet hole in my siding.

I now live in a gentrified area of town and own many guns. Go figure.

Actually, there have been some robberies in the neighborhood. I am not a paranoid person as displayed by not worrying about owning a weapon before, but have discovered that it is just smart to be prepared.

:Dcbrgator, there are many areas of Miami that are far from rough.
Coral Gables,Pinecrest,Miami Lakes,Aventura,West Miami,Doral,Palmetto Bay are virtually serene tropical oasis's and as safe as Andy Hardy's hometown for the most part.
You've got to come off Defcon and realize you're not in Baghdad.
The Gables, population about 40 grand, home of UM ,has had about 5 murders the last 8 years.
Stop worrying.Be alert and at least in Con yellow at all times, but don't be paranoid.
You're in one of the greatest places to live in America.South Beach,the Keys,Liquordale,Key Biscayne,frat parties,the girls.Relax.You'll love it.And 33143 is cool.My 3 daughters live there.
Trust me.
Oh yes ,and Go Gators,Tebow to repeat as Heisman Winner.

So tonight was my first night living in Miami...

I take it leaving Miami is not an option.

I was there last August for a convention - couldn't get back to Polk County fast enough.

I lived in a nice part of Tampa that went downhill over the years - fled to the country. So far so good.

Unfortunately crime is happening everywhere.

Good luck and stay safe.

I live in a township that is the crossroads of 3 rough cities and is becoming the new place for gangs to stake a claim. The city I work in is on the federal radar for drug traffic and production as well, sucks.

Let's see

Last week, car break-in

This spring, Attempted home break in, the guy popped a screen or two, but my dad tossed him across the yard, perp got locked up on 10 warrants

This winter, Car crashes into our fence and into our yard

Last Spring, Shooting 20 feet behind our house, one guy got hit.

Year before, car got stolen, returned 2 months later.

All this stuff just happened to us!!! A lot more crime towards college kids and neighbors. I live in a nice area to, but it is a few blocks from St. Louis City, which is a very tough place to live, although I don't sweat it. Shootings are either gang/drug related so you can't do much about it, robberies are either stores or college kids, but those can be sticky situations  Even if you get jumped, you only lose your wallet.

Just relax and be prepared.

For as small a town as Astor FL is it's very sketchy. I've had to switch from jogging (too dangerous) to kayaking on the Saint Johns. We'll see where I end up at the end of the year when I move to Gainesville (and maybe become a Gator).

I spent four college years in Waco Tx, and it was pretty rough in some areas. Granted, the college area was kind of sheltered from the rest of the city, but you didnt have to go far to find it. I had an apartment break in once, and a run in with a very shady magazine salesman, both of which made me glad I had a gun, but I've been to Miami before and its definately worse. Keep your eyes open out there.

Every city has crime. Every city has rough areas. I've grown accustomed to big cities. They all have their share of weirdos, oddballs, and other marginal types. That's the downside to living in a big city. You always have to keep your wits about you. The upside is that you're afforded all the conveniences of a large city. For crap's sake man, you're in Miami. Take in the beach, the good restaurants; not to mention there is an excellent cigar culture there with the large Cuban population. Oh yeah, and when you do all this, CCW and keep your wits about you. Not to rag on you or anything, but come on, you're complaining about living in one of the best cities in the country!

Shootings are either gang/drug related so you can't do much about it

Exactly, most gangbangers don't really care about you, so much as they care about the rival gang infringing on their drug sales. You're a potential client, the other guys are competitors.

hmm well the fbi did rank memphis as the most dangerous city in the us
best advice if you make eye contact give a head nod (friendly gesture and you dont look timid)
also leave an out any where you go

I live in Austin and while it has its usual bad areas, crime is hit or miss everywhere else. We just ran a drive-by in a nice-er, not upperclass but not lower, part of town last night. there was some robberies in a more upper area a couple of weeks ago. I CCW everywhere now, it's impossible to anticipate a fecal storm

sidenote: i just saw lloydkristmas's screename and am wondering if he's a limo driver :)

It's important to look like you belong there. Don't look like a tourist. It's OK to be a white guy in a bad neighborhood as long as you look like you've been there since childhood (think Forest Gump in the choir).

So is it "good and bad" neighborhoods based on color...white and black?:eek:
I think there's a word for this "kinda" of nonsense!

Oh yeah. You betta' bele' dat fool:D. Example: I pull up in my driveway, after work today, and I find a puppy just roaming around in my yard. I saw my dad throwing some fireworks in the yard to scare it off. Invasion repulsed. Then I patrol around our four acres out in the country for other "predators". I saw my rooster and the Guinea hens (wild turkeys [just like on the bottle] to the uninitiated) in distress. I go to check my flock and I noticed a wild cat stalking them from the seat of our tractor. I had to act quick, lives were on the line:).

I pulled my Mil-Pro .40 and just as he lunged I was able to squeeze a couple off. The cat took off and I sent four more down range after it as it crashed through the woods. I don't think I hit him (mostly shooting near it to scare it off as best that I could). It fled into our woods. My flock and their chicks are safe, for now.

I must be vigilante, always. Lives are at stake, as well as feed. My weapon of choice is my AR-15, I'm 7/7 (raccoons, possums, varmints) with it. However, it seems when there is an immediate need for defense, what you have on you is all you're going to have time to deploy.

Not a great neighborhood. It's not exactly like a Grand Theft Auto game here, but the liquor stores get robbed now and then, and you never know if the guy who comes up to your car in the Taco Bell drive-thru wants some "spare change, buddy?", or wants to sell you some of his "Ganja... man...", or has some stereo equipment in the back of his truck to sell cheap.

But I've never been robbed, jumped, jacked, or shot at while living here. That's pretty good... right?

Both Mrs. Foggy & I work in a not-so-good area of Cleveland (Hough)

Think of Watts (LA??), Harlem (NY, NY), Orange Mound (Memphis, TN) and you get the idea of the 'hood.

But both of our employers are very far left socialists, so no CCW at work for us. But yeah, I am just about condition red every day untill I get inside the building.

Yes, I'd rather not say exactly where but in Los Angeles county. A sheriff killed a block or so away earlier this decade. A gang member killed a block or so away 2 weeks ago.

The numbers say I do, but having gone to elementary school in Baltimore and high school only a few miles from D.C. it doesn't seem so bad.

:banghead:

The funny thing about the "rough parts of town" is that they tend to be strangely localized. Go three blocks, and suddenly everything looks a whole lot better.

Which is not to say that crime outside of the bad parts is impossible, of course. It is remarkable how people in a city tend to keep to certain parts of it though.
