Should teachers be allowed to carry guns?

Not only teachers but adult students should be allowed to carry in school as well... if they are legally allowed to carry everywhere else, why not in school?

No.

We can't trust teachers.

They are incapable of rational thought, fail at reasoned analysis of dangerous situations, and they cannot learn new skills.

Unlike non-teachers who carry guns, teachers will readily use their weapon to shoot students who get out of hand in class. They will also fail to properly conceal or retain their weapon so students will easily know that the teacher is carrying and be able to take the guns from the teachers with great frequency.

Teachers are just too dumb and irresponsible to be trusted carrying guns. In fact anyone dumb enough to work in any school, from janitors to college presidents, should not be allowed to carry a gun anywhere, especially at school. All of the rest of us who carry guns legally outside of schools are smart enough and responsible enough to safely handle a gun but teachers are not.

And on top of that, since schools are gun-free zones, then there is no reason for teachers to be armed. Why would you want to carry a gun into a gun-free zone? This would make it so easy for the gun-free criminal to get a gun from a teacher, or for the teacher to become a criminal all of the sudden and go on a shooting rampage. It's insane to allow guns into a school. We should keep schools gun-free, like they are now.

...

Just playing devil's advocate. ;)

[for those of you who can't tell, I am joking here. Of course I believe teachers should be able to carry guns at schools just like anyone should be allowed to carry a gun when they go to work... however even though I am not a teacher my employer still prohibits me from carrying a gun at work, but at least it's not a criminal offense as it would be if it were at a school]

Why didn't you state your opinion on your own subject??

BTW... it wasn't on Fox that teachers wanted to carry in schools, It was reported that some Texas teachers are now permitted to carry during school hours, in the classroom and with all of the legal permits/requirements that are normally needed.

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

And it's about time!

Of course they should be able to. Heck, I am almost on the side of sending all of the kids to school with guns (ok, not really  ).

Absolutely!!! Not just teachers, anyone who can legally carry elsewhere including students, and visitors.

Why would any thinking person want a school to be less safe than most anywhere else? Boggles my mind...

Bobo

Are not teachers citizens? Are tbey not of good character (most states run background checks on teachers.)

That being the case, why should they not be allowed to carry?

After all, we are forced by law to entrust our children to these teachers -- and they should be prepared to protect our children as tenaciously and effectively as we would ourselves.

Let the teachers carry guns? What next....seat belts in school buses?

Of course teachers should have the option to carry, IF the individual is CAPABLE and QUALIFIED to. And by carry, I mean CARRY! Not in her purse, not in his jacket on the coat rack, not in a locker, not in a desk drawer, not anywhere that a child can get to it. CARRY means on your person, concealed, where it can DO SOME GOOD if the need arises.

Absolutely, yes.

I wouldn't have any objection to requiring specific training, so that those who do carry in the classroom can be effective and safe if they ever need to use the guns in that special situation.
