Since getting a M1 Garand from the CMP last spring I have been thinking it has been time to go and invest in some sort of gun safe. We currently have 7 weapons of various types including military rifles, shotguns and .22 rifles. I have talked to some of the different safe salesmen at the stores around town (Champion, Browning, Stack On) from other distributors(Ft Knox, Amsec) and researched on the internet. I have looked at some of the discussions on this forum specifically by a1abdj and CB900F but wanted to put a post with my specific situation.

I think I am looking for something that can store both weapons and documents(the girl from the local champion safe place recommended getting a firebox to go inside the safe for documents). Ive watched my budget had grow from $400 to 2k+ since I started looking at $400 sentry RSC, then went to the Sam's Winchester Safe for $650, to the $1000 Browning Bronze and the $1900 Browning Medallion series safes, and priced the fort knox protector series at ~2400. Money wise I am willing to pay for something good since security and fireproofing, not money are my major concerns yet I don't want to go over 3 grand total. I am looking for one would be pretty much a plain Jane safe (I don't mind the high gloss, just don't like the extra $200 to get it) I would think a safe in the 20-30 sq ft range (though I would consider a 40 sqft depending on the price) would be the right size. I like the external hinges and would prefer a rotating lock. I'm partial to seeing an example of before I buy anything. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get a good deal for the money.

For less than 3 large you should be able to get a used commercial safe. Call some local locksmiths and see what they have. You might have to make some racks but thats easy.

A good used commercial safe will be a better deal price-wise since you can often get one essentially for hauling it off, but you better have lots of strong buddies and a good idea how to move it or 9-cases of ice cold Bud is going to waste.

Besides, you shouldn't be spending your economic stimulus check on clinging to guns you already own! You should spend it on getting MORE guns! You could get 7 Hex Receiver Mosin 91/30s, or 3 Finn M-39s, or 4 Turked Mausers... Or you could buy a boatload of surplus ammo.

I'll second the used safe suggeston, but rarely can you get them for hauling them off (although it does happen). Most people also want a large insurance policy in place in the event you kill sombody moving it, which is really going to force you to hire a professional.

In the $2K range, I'd suggest the AMSEC BF series. One of the best buys in its price range.

Graffunder and AMSEC are about the closest thing you'll get to a real fire rated safe in a gun safe package.

AMSEC vs Fort Knox

I like the ~1800 price range of the AMSEC but am curious how it would stack up with the Fort Knox Guardian series. Im just not sure it would be worth the $1500 to get a Fort Knox ($3000)? I think the main features i like are the Diagonal corner bolts and the floor level with the door.

I'm starting to hate safe threads. They always start with a guy wanting to protect a few guns and end with a "safe expert" telling everyone that anything short of a bank vault is a waste of time.
I'm a believer that something is better than nothing. Locking your guns up is better than leaning them against a wall.
I am very happy with my 800# Champion gun safe. Yah, I know, Bank of America has a better one downtown, but I sleep well.

I on the other hand am starting to like them. The experts give great advice, as is to be expected. After reading them all, I'm not going to waste my money on an RSC.
Especially when a real safe can be had for not all that much.
