Busting a flat screen monitor IS dangerous. Even if you disconnect it from the power supply (which holds 50k volts+ for several days after unplugging, if not longer), the screen portion itself contains Mercury, which is very damaging to the environment. He is right, you should have taken it to a proper waste facility.
To tell you, the old CRT monitors do not contain mercury, BUT the bulbs in them can send fragments out as fairly high velocities.
And yes, for you non-Kali folks, disposal of electronic waste is a fairly big deal here, but that's not a bad thing, and they make it easy to comply with.
