Archery season has just opened in my little area of the world.

Already, a guy who is married to an aquaintance of mine has fallen from a deer stand. Broke both bones of both legs, both wrists, some ribs, has complications from formed blood clots, etc. No details of the accident yet.

BE CAREFUL GUYS!

More proof that we did NOT evolve from monkeys. If you are going to climb trees WEAR YOUR SAFETY HARNESS! Friend of mine took a tumble as well, but it was not near this bad. Me, I stay on the ground. That's what cammo is for, especially when you reach my age! :D

Somebody always has it worse than you it seems, yet you are a misstep away from disaster or death,

I'm post-op hind leg reconstruction (2 weeks and it still Hurts} with months to go. Pre-hunt corn to feeder accident. Damnold ATVs! One is either in crisis or fixin' to be....

For YOUR SAKE if not g.f. wife or kid(s) , wear the harness, It only makes you look smarter and may indeed save your life. Don't end it in a " I'm cool, I'll save some time" frame of mind.

It really Sucks BAD to sit out a hunting season... trust me......

In a climbing stand or a strap-on stand, if I go more than 6 feet off the ground, I wear a harness at all times. If it's a ladder stand or tripod-ladder stand, I'll go to 12-14 feet before I put on a harness; far less likelihood of falling.

You've got to change out your nylon straps every 2 years, also!

Hope the guy makes a full recovery. :(

I once knew a couple of guys who took fatal falls from tree stands and broke their backs. One landed on his head, the other landed across a downed tree trunk. Neither had bothered with a safety rope.

USE your safety devices......

Yes, strap on.

Guy in the neighborhood stepped backward off of his stand and landed on a
small stump with the middle of this back.

He can walk now............. with a walker.

I always wear a harness, they look complicated, but once you actually try to put it on it works well. And aren't uncomfortable.

As if we needed another reason to avoid freezing our arses off -- not to mention boring ourselves senseless -- by perching in a tree like some bizarre vulture waiting for a meal to come along. :neener:

These posts remind me of a good friend, a police chief, who died 30 years ago as a result of dropping his muzzleloader from a tree stand. Gun discharged, slug caught him under the left armpit.

He survived the wound, to die later in the hospital of a massive blood clot.

Sad event- 35 yrs old at the time, and a good guy.

"Bizarre Vulture"??? Being a rather -ahem-portly fellow, one of my coworkers recently opined that me sitting in a treestand must make the tree look like a camouflage water tower....very funny, but I couldn't answer immediately due to the fresh venison jerky I was gnawing on...

And, yes, they make harnesses for us big guys, and they are even more important, as we tend to hit the ground harder!
