A range buddy cautioned against CCI small pistol primers. He said they had a bad experience with CCI small pistol primers stretching the pocket.

I use CCI exclusivily in gas loading rifles but have always used Winchester primers for pistol rounds. What has been your experience with different brands of pistol primers? Which do you recommend and why?

Thanks in advance for responding.

Scott

All I have used for years is either CCI or Winchester. Makes no differance to me which I can get at the time, just so it's one or the other.

I use Wolf primers because I have been able to get them for $16 per 1,000. They load like Winchester and so far all of them have gone bang.

The primers didn't stretch the primer pockets the pressures he loaded the rounds to stretched the pockets. If you don't want enlarged primer pockets don't tip the powder cannister so far.

The case head is a LOT thicker and stronger than the primer cup so the head will force a large OD primer cup to swage to the pocket's ID.

Larry speaks the truth.

As to the question, I use Federal primers exclusively because almost all of my guns have competition triggers and Federals are the only ones soft enough to go reliably.

Federal only for the same reason .38 Special stated. Never had a defective one from Federal. Seen lots of Winchester with upside down anvils or no priming compound.

I've been using Winchester, but recently switched to Wolf, they work just as good, but are about $6/brick cheaper.

The cci priemrs stretched the pocket? And I bet that the bullets caused themselves not to hit the target too..

Nothing wrong with CCI primers.

I prefer Winchester but lately switched to Wolf due to cost savings. No troubles yet.
I did pick up some CCI large rifle primers for $18 a thousand this weekend because the price was not to be refused.

Like everyone else, I call BS on the 'primer stretched the pocket' theory.

I don't want to insult your range buddy, but offer him the opinion that he is not sufficiently experienced to forward a reasonable theory on the subject. If he overloaded the case or failed to inspect an overworked case, he is trying to excuse his incompetence by blaming his equipment for his own failure. Primer cups are made of copper and the the case is made of brass. This is by design so the maleable primer will not damage the harder case. If the brass expands excessively, it is due to overcharging the case or reloading the case too many times.

As mentioned by Mal, Larry, Evan and the other experienced members above, Range Buddy is unfortunately mistaken.

I've used thousands of CCI small pistol primers with no issue. They are a good primer. The only time I ever had one fail to go bang was when I didn't seat it enough, and that was 100% my fault.

For guns with lighter springs, I like Federals, they are very soft and go bang easily. But I have no issue with the CCIs.

I've used every brand on the market I've been aware of except Federal and if I had a revolver with a very soft trigger spring, I'd use them as well without hesitation. I have yet to experience a bad brand. I have managed to mangle quite a few over the years due to laziness or screw ups on my part setting up a progressive press.

regards,

Dave

My favorites are CCI, then Winchester, then Remington, and my least favorite are Federal as their smal pistol primers rupture very easily, especially in my Glocks.
