Anyone in here bought a gun from a website, like Bud's? Is it better than going to the local dealer? It seems that Bud's prices are pretty good, and I've heard of people buying from gunbroker. Still new to the gun game, thanks for your input gentlemen.

I have bought from Bud's (I am a listed FFL for transfer there as well), I have bought from Gunbroker, Lipseys, Davidsons and several others. I have never been disappointed in the product or the price. When using an auction, carefully check the sellers rating, it tells the whole story. Drop the seller an e-mail and see how fast they respond. Great service seems to be rule rather than the exception.

The gun has to be transferred to your local dealer and picked up there, with whatever regulations and paperwork that might entail. Check what the dealer's transfer fee is before buying; excessive fees will cut into or negate whatever you saved.

Sadly, I have done much better with guns bought online, both new and used, than at local gunshops. No problems at all, and much better prices.

Definitely call around to find out how much the dealers charge for FFL transfers. One of them in my area charges 20% of the value of the firearm, plus the $35 DROS...that's an extra $235 on a $1,000 gun. The best deal I've been able to find locally is $40 + $35 DROS.

CA is a special basket case at best. I had to register with the CA DOJ just to ship to CA from Texas. Then I had to get "permission" to actaully do the shipping. Here, I charge a flat 20.00 for ANY gun locally, and if you do more than 1 on the same trip to see me, I cut the rest to 10 bucks each. I like my customers to leave happy, and maybe on the next purchase, they might even buy one from me! :D

I have bought from both Bud's and Impact Guns. My local FFL charges $25 for the transfer. Bud's lists most of their guns with shipping included, but if you use a credit card to purchase they add a surcharge, I think 3%. I also ordered a gun from Gunbroker from a retail shop out west.

I have had good luck with ordering online.

I always buy guns online. Better prices, and better service than most of the gun shops around me (plus the better selection)

It's great! I have had good luck, even though I haven't done it that much. I would rather buy in person, and check it carefully. There is also the possibility of buying a firearm, online, on layaway. Thus it is possible to purchase a particular firearm that your are unable to afford. I recently paid up such a layaway recently and they sent me a really nice Hakim. It was high market price, but that;s okay, I couldn't even afford a cheap one all at once, and this one is really nice. I have cultivated a relationship with at least least two ginstores, and they charge me a minimum for a transfer. It's a win for everyone, and the biggest negative is the wait.

Same here. I have yet to purchase a firearm from a store since online prices have always beat store prices.

I bought a shotgun from an FFL on Gunbroker last week. Three days later I bought a 1911 from Bud's. They both went to "Shipping status" today. That's how fast Bud's is, not to mention the website makes it as user-friendly as buying a gun online can possibly be.

He has thousands of FFLs saved on his own database and you can just click the one near your house that you want him to transfer the gun to.

Bud's is great!

And as Jake just mentioned, depending on your state sales tax and how much your FFL charges for a transfer, any gun more than $400-500 can be had cheaper online, even after shipping and transfer fees.

That being said, keep your local shops open too! :)

I keep my local shops open by paying for transfer fees. All but $2-3 goes to the shop for the transfer fee.

I chuckled when I read this ,and maybe I'm getting a little full of myself here, but Buds new-found fast-shipping status may ( I said MAY ) be a result of my recent problems and related communications with one of their VP's. A month or so ago,I ordered a CZ 452 from them, and posted here my dissatisfaction with the fact that they took an entire week to box and ship my rifle, even after I called them several days after ordering and they told me "it's shipping TODAY", and it didn't. I was very surprised and impressed to have gotten a PM here from their VP apologizing for the problem and asking for details hoping to avoid future problems, which I respected and appreciated. I related what had transpired, that my main issue was with their ridiculously long "5 buisness-day shipping" policy.
I did point out that, despite this issue, I understood that they are a reputable operation, and I'd still do buisness with them again.
Anyway, regardless of my debatable influence on Buds now-speedy shipping,I'm happy to hear about it.
Oh yeah.......the CZ is dialed right in and kicking ass !!!! :D

CDNN has been a great "online" source for pistols. They usually ship same day as you order or next day after some time in the afternoon. I believe they have a flat shipping rate, too.
Fortunately, our gun club treasurer is an FFL...he does transfers for $20 plus $10 for NICS.

Yikees! Is that supposed to be a deal?? I just got a gun off Gunbroker, and found an FFL in my area that charged $12.00 total.. (7$ for the fee and 5$ for the bg check) I'd not buy online if the fees were more than 15 or 20 max.. Then again, there was a pawn shop listed in my area that wanted 50$ to do a transfer, so I guess the milage varies.. Dont know how anyone would pay that much for a transfer fee though, as it would most likely push the cost of the gun up so much that it negates any "deal" you got from shopping online..

I bought several guns online. Some places like impact guns have layway plans. Anyways I have had nothing but good luck.

Look around in here for online stores to buy from, Bud's is one of the good ones, but there are others.

I've found that certain stores often have the best prices for a certain line of product, and average prices for other lines of product, and occasionally, any given store may have the best sale price on a particular product at a given time.

For example, as I recall, Bud's often has good selection and pricing on S&W semis, but may not always have the best selection or price of another product on a particular day, maybe glock or ket tec or something I was looking for, and maybe someone else was a better source for glock most days, but some other store had a killer sale price for a limited time.

Before buying from an unknown store, search the forum here for the dealer/site name, and see what comes up, should give ya a feel for their process, strength's and weaknesses.

For example, I bought something from Impact Guns one time, had exactly what I wanted and a good price. They have had some weaknesses, some I learned about before hand, and some I learned later. Like they list a lot of stuff as on back order but you can order it/reserve it. Or they lack a little in communication via their online system, but I found once I called them, I could track the order better talking to someone, rather than emailing them.

As for the transfers, many gun shops charge a premium, give your guys a chance, but if they want to charge more than $20-$25 for a transfer, I'd go somewhere else.

If no gun shops offer a good transfer rate, try pawn shops, they often sell guns and do transfers, and may be more competitive.

There are some FFL dealers that don't have a big store/overhead. I found one of these guys in my local area, happened to be a CCW instructor I was looking at getting a class anyway, and turned out when I googled "FFL Dealer in My City ST" this website turned up:

http://www.shooting-hunting.com/results.html?Keywords=&City=seattle&State=WA&Zip=&Country=usa

I tried to do a search on Seattle WA, assuming that's where you're at. You could see if any dealers are in your area here, or try your own google search.

Search forum for online gun stores or dealers, or something, there are several threads where people give substantial lists of dealers, and some comments about them...

Good luck, I bought my first handgun online, and saved well over $100 compared to local. I still shop locally, but compare to online too....

(BTW, anyone know why I had trouble posting this in firefox? Had to use IE coz FF said 'forum only allows posting once in 60 seconds, you must wait another 37 seconds. So basically, it tried unsuccessfully to post for 20 plus seconds and thought I was trying to post multiple times, but I wasn't....hmmm seems I'm having trouble in IE too, geez)

good lord, is it the forum or my machine? sorry, I only tried to post once, but even when I refreshed my machine in another browser to see if it posted, it didn't show any of my posts, restarted, and now multiple posts...weird
