Shipping Ammo UPS?

Hey guys. I was wondering if UPS charged an additional Hazmat fee on top of regular shipping charges. I searched on the internet and couldn't find anything about it other than they require a label. I just wanted to make sure before I tell someone that the shipping is "x" when it is actually "x + 20".

Complete ammo has no hazmat fee, only needs the ormd label.

Word of advice, print the shipping text off the UPS web site that covers the regs as many local UPS centers don't seem to know their own regs. Also have the phone number for the UPS 800 so that after the long drawn out argument from the local people you can dial the phone hand it to them and let them be told what their job is.

Hazmat is for powder and primers.

feedthehogs is right. Be prepared to explain to the counter monkey their own job. And bring the hazmat support phone number with you. The look on the clerk's face is priceless when they get the facts handed to them by their own company.

You can also hand write "ORM-D, cartridges, small arms" on the box in black marker, as long as a rectangle is drawn around "ORM-D."

NavyLT - I have never done that. Have no idea what is involved, if it costs more, or if it is possible for ammo. Care to enlighten me?

I've done the hand drawn ORM-D before, while the clerk looked on, wondering what I was doing. I had to explain it to him...but no issues. This IS AZ, after all.

So silly that powder and primers need a hazmat fee, but not assembled ammunition. Of course if I complained too much about this illogical rule, they'd just charge the hazmat for ammo too. :cuss:

You can even carry your box of ORM-D labeled small arms cartridges onto a bus... as long as you don't exceed 100 pounds

I have not done it with ammo before. There is no extra charge as far as I know. Go to UPS website and somewhere on there is create a shipment. Now, it has been forever since I have done it, so I don't know if you will have to create an actual UPS account. But it might be something to look at. If nothing else, you should get a prepaid label and if the driver doesn't take it, it should be easier for you to carry it to a shipping location.

Not quite! A 100 pound box of ammunition would be classed as a Division 1.4S Explosive material. The limit for ORM-D is 66 pounds.

That's because DOT classes powder as a Divsion 4.1 Flammable Solid and Primers as a Division 1.4S Explosive. Neither is eligible for reclass to ORM-D.

ORM-D material is exempt from many of the packaging, labeling, marking, and shipping paper requirements in the Hazmat regulations. That's why HAZMAT fees are not normally charged for ORM-D materials. They can be handled basically the same as non hazmat packages.

Powder is spillable, that's why its hazmat (at least that is what the UPS folk told me when I brought that up once) one might assume primers are also small and can be spilled thus causing problems that spilled loaded ammo doesn't cause (but y'all know about assumin').

Honestly I have always figured it was a good idea for us shooters to not rock the boat on this one because if the regs get changed they'll get changed so that loaded ammo has to be sent with hazmat fees, not getting the requirement removed for reloading supplies.

United Parcel Service (UPS):

1. Pack ammo within a sturdy cardboard box, gross weight limit of 66 pounds.
2. Print ORM-D label, cut out and tape to a least one side of box.
3. Take package to a UPS Customer Center only - NOT at Drop-Off Box, The UPS Store, Mail Boxes etc., Sonic. Might be a good idea to have the UPS Hazardous Material Support Center number with you -- 800-554-9964. Varied success with UPS pick-up at your location.

Per UPS:
UPS accepts domestic ground shipments of ammunition that have been classified by the shipper as "Cartridges, small arms", "ORM-D" (Other Regulated Material). The package must be properly marked according to the requirements of Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR). Contact the Hazardous Material Support Center at 800-554-9964 for details on regulatory information.
