My wife wants to get a camera and feeder to put on the back of the farm to see what travels through our area. Questions are-

What is a good, affordable tree mounted camera to get?

and

What tripod feeder works good? With a spinner or without?

i have moultrie for both. the new gamespy models work well ($100). if anyone starts trying to get you spend 300 bucks on one with a super fast trigger speed, dont! these deer are going to be eating at a feeder and will stick around!

Easier just to send you over to my blog.

Short answer: Get digital Moultires. Get more than one. Cheap. Don't worry about them being stolen. Extra cards. Feeders are all on sale. I just pour a gallon of corn on the ground every time I swap cards- usually 3 day intervals. Run them all year, not just during season.

I like the rechargeable lantern batts, but the trend is back to using multiple D cells.

I have a moultrie I-40 and love it($200)., I dont like a flash on a game camera. IR will catch more animals than flash will. I saw some study that had 40% more pics from IR vs. Flash(dont ask, I have no clue where I read that). Battery life is also MUCH longer with IR, The I-40 claims 150 days, mines been about 3 1/2 months on the same batteries. +1 about cheap is ok for feeders. The fast triggers are needed for trail cameras, but at feeders the deer should stick around and smile for you. Another thing, with IR moving pics at night dont always turn out great(a few look like ghosts), so the flash cameras get the nod on that.

FWIW, I hear GREAT things about the scoutguard550, dont have one, but will next year. I think they run about $200 also.

I have a Remington feeder. I can't say how well other brands work as it's the only one I've ever owned. I can say that mine works well. Also, the customer service is great. I got the feeder for Christmas last year and didn't get it out of the box until right before season opened Oct. 1. When I figured out the digital timer didn't work, I called 'em up and they sent me a new one for free. Technically, it was almost a year old. Can't beat that.

As for trail cams... Well, I'm hoping to have a review on one of them for next year. :D
