I would be interested in knowing what the other members are paying for an hour at the range. In my area $15/hour seems to be the going rate. Extended practice sessions can get expensive. I have lobbied the range owners to give a discount to CCW license holders/NRA members/ or just me but so far, no dice.

$500/hour where I used to live.

I'm going to back up loneviking here. I hate shooting indoors. loud, painful, teaches you to flinch, it's usually poorly lit, etc. ad nauseum. My favorite caliber are .357 mag, .45 acp, and .44. None of these are fun indoors. Even with serious ear protection, .357 and .44mag are marginal outdoors!

Unless you live in downtown NYC, Boston, etc., and the outdoors are hours away, you have options. USFS, BLM, and most state lands allow you to shoot pretty much without restriction (very minimal, e.g., not across or along a road, or near a habitable building). Find some land and use it!

Or, find a friend with land, and get his/her permission. Pay them with free ammo. Unless you are shooting only .22, buy a reloading kit and roll your own cheaply. Space isn't an issue. I used to live in an 800sf apartment in manhattan, and my Dillon press took up less space than my bedroom nightstand! (well, about the same, I guess).

When I lived in NYC and range membership was required for licensing to own a gun, I paid about $500/year just to be able to legally own my guns. That worked out to $500/hour since I showed up only once a year to keep my membership up, and did the rest of my shooting outdoors in "free" states.

$500/hour was pretty steep, in my book. But that's Democrats for ya' (even if they call themselves "Giuliani" or "Bloomberg.")

The ranges in Tallahassee, FL and in Elko, NV are both public and there is no charge for use. Financial support is thru Pitman Robertson, County, State and NRA grants.

THe indoor range by me is 15 an hour also. But the club I belong to is 120 a year. You should look for a club or public range in your area.

The indoor club I belong to is $180/year, soon to be $204/year. Members get a key and 24/7 access.

The club has open to the public sessions twice a month for $10 a session (like 1 to 5 pm on a Sunday).

Cen. OH. non member rate are 16~18.00 per hr. The outdoor range I work at is 12.00 first hour then cut in half after that. Members are 8.00 (150' range), 12.00 (300yd range). unlimited time.

about $1.00 per hour based on $300 annual membership. it is a 15 minute drive from my house with 75' indoor [24/7]and 100 yard outdoor.
closest public is $15 to $25 / 50 minutes [prepay to basic rental] but you must buy & shoot only their ammo. rules--no laughing, no smiling, no having fun.

Here in southern Maine, I pay 100.00 a year and that covers 2 ranges. Pertty much shoot from the crack of dawn till whenever you want to leave. Bob

one range is free, one is $10 per shooter, no limit on time. and the third is $ dollars per shooter no limit on time.

Funny you should ask. I use a local indoor, 100yd range. It's a nice place but a bit pricey at $15 an hour and they don't offer a yearly membership.

I went there the other day to break in my new Kel-Tec. When he rang me up it was $22.50!!!!! I couldn't believe it. I would have walked out, but I really wanted to try out the new gun. When I got to my station the range officer recognized me and apologized for the increase. He said they had to raise the price because the handgun shooters kept hitting the cables.

I certainly don't hit the cables, or anything else I'm not supposed to hit, and that will definitely be my last visit. I'll stick to shooting outside in the cold on my friends farm.

We don't have to rely on pay-to-shoot ranges out here so whatever the cost of ammo is, is the price I pay to shoot on public lands.

Jeez. I pay $25 a year for access to a private club with a dozen outside ranges of varying distance. No cost per visit, just show up when you want to shoot and clean up after yourself. Ranges open from 8am till dusk every day.

I'm in NE Ohio . . . the indoor range I used to go to was $12/hr, I think; haven't been there in a while. It was about a 20 min drive. Last time I went, they were getting more restrictive about what ammo you could use, and I think they said they were going to only allow what they sold you.

I found an outdoor rifle range off in Amish country; it's $10/hr, but about 40 min drive.

My backyard is always free, but my setup here is only 25 yds, so I have to go to horse-buggy-ville to sight in my rifle.

Poconos PA here. I use free state game lands for most handgun and rifles. Handguns are 25 and 50 yards but when I go during the week it's empty and I also shoot 5-10yard range. rifles are 50 /100 /200 yards.

I sometimes use Pocono Pistol Club for 15-18 dollars and hour (Thursday is discounted). It has really nice facility and great staff with electronic target holders and all. This is rarely used but when needed it's very close.

Shotguns is another story. I'm still trying to find a nice shotgun place since moving here a few weeks ago. So far there is a place that's $150 a year and $30 for a hundred skeets or 40 for non-members. I'm still looking for something better though.

I don't pay one red cent for range time. It's a free, open, public range that I shoot at.

Nice...yet to find an outdoor range by me :(
No place to shoot rifle and shotgun.

Local Indoor range is $15 per day or $175 for 15 month

Outdoor skeet/trap $9 for 25 clay at an outdoor sportings clay or $22 for the course.

Where I live there are no indoor ranges. There is one public range with a trap house, pistol ranges, a 200 meter rifle range with benches and a cover over the firing line. There is also a 500 meter range with one bench. The City maintains it. It opens at 7:00AM and there is no charge. There is also no range master, so during deer season, its a good place to stay away from, at least on weekends.

There is also a privately owned skeet range.

$75 a year, outdoor range, covered benches, bring your own targets and frames. I am retired and shoot during the week when it is not crowded.

indoor range

One indoor rnge on my side of town ,but the guy wants $365.00 a yr. club costs + u must use his own ammo ( 1/2 again as much as u can buy at wally world), needles to say I drive to outdoor range 15 miles away for $ 8.00 all day

A privately-owned range about 45 minutes outside of Boston charges about $20.hour but they aren't really strict on the time unless someone else is waiting. Mass has very few for-profit ranges. Most people here join a club or association.

Shooter still seeks range

Thanks for all the replies. I guess that I may be stuck with the $15/hr charge for my relatively nearby indoor range. Like most, it is quite restrictive as to what you can and can't do: no draws from holster, no rapid fire, no full auto, no shooting while moving, etc. etc. At least they don't require you to buy their ammo--yet. If you buy blocks of time (5 hrs. or more) they discount to $10/hr but there are no yearly memberships. It seems to me that offering a substantial discount to NRA members (with proof of membership) or CCW permit holders would make good business sense as the long term health of shooting facilities depends on keeping the politicians from closing them entirely and I suspect that these are two groups of gun owners who might, just might, be a bit more involved than your average John Q. Gunowner. In the meantime, I'll keep looking for a free and outdoor place to shoot here in north central Florida.
