So, we all (most of us anyhow:D) know that .38spc can be shot in a .357 mag gun, but how many other interchangable cartridges are there? .458 win mag in .458 lott, ect, does anyone have a list? Will a .40S&W work in a 10mm Auto pistol?

If you have a better title, feel free to help:D

Many have shot 40's from 10mm Glocks, some by mistake, but it is not recommended. 45 Colt will fire in a 454 Casull, and both can be fired from a S&W 460, 44 special in a 44 mag. Some revolvers have been modified to shoot 9mm from a 357 mag or 45 ACP from a 45 Colt.

The Taurus Judge revolver will fire 45 colt or 410 shotshells.

.38 Special cylinders can handle .38 Long Colt and others. .44 Magnum can handle .44 Special and .44 Russian. .44 Special can handle .44 Russian. .22 Long Rifle cylinders can handle .22 Long and .22 Short.

Astras in 9mm Largo can handle all kinds of stuff.

To expand on what jmr40 mentioned about .45 Colt, if you get a S+W 460 series revolver it will chamber and fire 460 S+W Magnum, 454 Casull, 45 Colt, 45 Cowboy Special, and I believe 45 Schofield. That's versatility right there, too bad they cost an arm and then some.

.454 Casull revolvers can handle .45 Long Colt. That's probably my favorite combo: on the low end you have a powerful but relatively pleasant cartridge to shoot. On the high end you have an obscene near-rifle cartridge that's 50% more powerful than the .44 Magnum.

9mm will chamber and fire in a .40 S&W. I...have no idea if the bullet made it to the target...but it worked :uhoh:
My dad has a ruger (single six?) that has cylinders for .22mag and .22lr

I've seen a 40 S&W fired in a S&W M&P 45 ACP. Not recommended as it blows out the magazine, throws metal fragments into the air and does nasty things to the shooters hand. BOOBO40INA45CHAMBER.jpg

There are a few rifle interchangeables like the already mentioned .458 Win Mag in a .458 Lott, a design feature of the Lott, and there were a lot of .45-70s shot in .45-90 rifles until the present BPCR revival got some of the old cartridges back in production. But high intensity bottlenecks are not as accomodating as straight wall pistol or BP rifle cartridges.

Yes.clean the chambers well,or it may have leading preventing the use of the longs when you switch back.Same for .32 H&R mag.You can go down, but don't go up.DON'T,[for instance fire .32 H&R mag in a gun chambered and made for .32 S&W Longs, even if it will fit. Some of the old guns just won't take it.

interchange

32 ACP in 32 S&W long. there is a colt 32 short and long not compatable to S&W and there is a 38 colt short.:uhoh::eek::D

Yeah, people get all excited over the possibility of shooting cheap .32 ACP in their .32 revolvers. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Due to low pressure, it is not as bad as the notion of shooting .38 Super in a .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver.

Nitpick Alert:

The original short .32 revolver cartridge from Smith and Wesson is the .32 S&W. The word "short" does not appear in its name. So you have the .32 S&W and the .32 S&W Long, unlike the .32 Short and Long Colt.

Handguns...

You can shoot .357mag and .38spl in a gun chambered for the .357 Maximum

Rifles...

You can shoot .357mag and .38spl in a gun chambered for the .357 Maximum

:D

The ultimate multi-chamber gun?

THE MEDUSA!
Too bad they are impossible to find and as expensive as ever when you do.

22LR in a 22mag
32acp in 32 S&W short or long
32 short colt in S&W short or long
32 long colt in S&W long
all the above in 32 H&R magnum
all the above in the new 312 mag
380acp in 9mm [ will not function the slide-zero damage]
9mm in a 357SIG [+p will function the slide-zero damage]
9mm in 40S&W [will not function the slide-zero damage]
40 in a 45acp [not function the slide-zero damage]

i dont have a 45GAP to play with

i would not put a 357SIG in a 40-- pressure trumps curiosity

The .45 GAP will feed and fire in a 1911, but often won't cycle the action.

The Astra 400 will, by coincidence, accept some other cartridges, but it was neither designed nor intended to do so.

.38 ACP/.38 Super will NOT fit a .38 Special chamber, but will fit some .38 S&W chambers.

Just thought I'd add a few words of caution:

1) Unless it says specifically in the manual that you can shoot multiple calibers, don't unless you check with the manufacturer.
2) Don't be stupid and think "I'll just try it." It might be the last stupid though you ever have.

I didn't see it above, and though it probably isn't quite what the OP had in mind, if you have a rifle that shoots 5.56, you can shoot 223 in all the instances I've come across. HOWEVER, if you have 223, you shouldn't shoot 5.56 unless you check with the manufacturer first. More than likely, you won't be able to.
