Hey guys, where I was deer hunting this weekend with my bow there sounds like there is a massive overabundance of coyotes - saw one and heard howls out the ying yang at dusk in several directions, all close by. It is like this precisely because it's inside the city limits (in a semi-rural, semi-suburbian area), where shooting any gun except a shotgun is illegal (plus I don't think anyone other than me hunts anything in this area - it's a real yuppie area - 500K+ home subdivisions abound - and that's a lot of house in this state). It's legal to hunt deer and other game with a bow in this area, as I was, however. But seems like yotes might be even harder than deer to get them close enough to hunt with a bow, and perhaps not worth the effort. One of these yotes, BTW, killed by brother's family's cat who lives over there - my guess is the yotes make a pretty good living off the meowing and yipping tasty nuggets in the nearby suburban backyards. Point is, that's the main reason for hunting them. So any tips or secrets to luring them to bow range, other than ordinary yote calling tips?

Leftover table scraps and el-cheapo dog food. Works like a charm.

If I wuz a shotgunner in such an area, though, I'd probably go for a turkey choke, and use some sort of high-brass load. #4 or larger oughta work to 50 yards or more.

I guess I *could* use a shotgun, that is true. I think you're limited to BB or smaller - so BB is plenty large enough to be ethical if you get them to 20-25 yards, correct?

Cheap dog food - good idea. :)

I know a guy who baits them with cheap canned cat food. He says the smell is more potent. Than he uses a dying rabbit call. And waits and waits and waits. He has taken several this way with his bow though.

Yup, that will do it. Aim for the head/neck area. I've seen them shot and killed from that distance with smaller. If nobody hunts the area and they haven't heard any calls, you shouldn't have much trouble calling in a few at close range. It is also really fun to do by the way, if you've never done it.

My Model 12 is full choke with the old paper-hull shells. With modern plastic, it's extra-full. Now, a bobcat is about coyote size. I managed to kill one with Winchester high-brass 7-1/2 at about 25 yards, poking the muzzle out my back door. A somersault and dead in place.

I believe randy anderson from the primos calling videos has and entire video on coyote hunting with a bow. Called verminators i believe.

best way we use is to use whatever bait you want. (cat food does do well) and a blackout ground blind. we also leave the bait out for a day or three. whilst it is sitting out we take some old shirts that we have worn and place them in the ground blind. the yotes will sneak in at night and get used to both.

freshen up the bait and sit your own self in the blind. hit the calls and wait for dogs. shoot dogs. rejoice.

what about a .22 lr? sorry for the topic change, but i hear that .22 is kind of iffy for yotes...how about that aguila sniper? the 60 gr .22? Would that be better than a high velocity cci stinger?

hmmm...

i had one run across the back of my property and i walked back to the pond. Question .. aare coyotes burrowers like foxes. i ve located a huge hole with scat on the ground nearby..looks like dog pooh with a lot of fur and feathers in it..

sure, coyotes burrow. They are a tremendous challenge with a bow, lots of fun.
