Ok, so here was the situation. I was walking back from the gym last night on campus (I'm in college). As I was walking on the sidewalk someone yells "Hey dude!" I keep walking. They yell again, so I turn around. Two guys come jogging up and ask me if I have a light. I checked all around me just before they got to me to make sure there wasn't anyone else trying to blindside me, and then focused on them. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but better safe than sorry, right? I carry a small folder and a lighter in my right pocket and as I grabbed the lighter I slipped the folder up into my sleeve where I could get it quicker if need be. Needless to say the two guys lit their cigarrettes, gave me back my lighter, and walked away.

What would you have done? Should I have simply said no and walked away? Should I have ignored them?

"No harm no foul"

unless someone really needs help or i am in a populated area i feel the same paranoia

You did nothing wrong, at least. Sometimes, we do have to remember, the guy that asks for a light, may really only want a light.

I don't remember the exact line, but, I am polite and friendly to everyone I encounter on the street, and I have a plan to kill anyone I encounter on the street.

I think you did the right thing. I automatically go into questioning mode if a random person(s) feels the need to interact with me after dark. Keep your guard up after the sun goes down if you are in a bad area...

The answer is "NO". Always. They can buy their own lighter, and support their own habits.

Could be the last two hours will help assure you keep making it to work every day- who knows? You're welcome for the links,

I'd just say "no, I don't have one," even if I did. Nothing says you have to tell the truth...then you're not rudely ignoring them, but they also have no reason to hang around you (or catch you off guard as you're digging for your lighter).

You did the right thing, helped someone out but were still ready and prepared just incase things got hairy.

ps-Why do people that smoke never have lighters?

A co-worker of mine was mugged in Reno last summer when someone asked for a cigarette. He turned to answer and was knocked silly. Couldn't even remember seeing the guy(s).

Ya did nothin wrong, but possible open your self up to an attack. ya did what ya did, and no bad thing happen but this is a classic example of a set up for a mugging. been this way forever. but what do ya do when saying no and keep moving could have been the initiative for a confrontation due to "disrespect", We can only do what we can to protect ourselfs with dignity and the hope of making it home. doesnt matter if your a kung fu master of an librarian. ted nugent said it best, "the second amendment is my carry permit". i'm not saying to break the law and carry without obtaining the permit, but look at the word closely-(permit)? I was told "shall not be infringed" not given permission............................
