My wife and I pulled into a big grocery store and noticed a small car in the outskirts of the parking lot where there is informal "car sales" parking. This is about 150 yards away from the main entrance to the store and immediately adjacent to the street, so not very many folks around. We decided to look at the car , and pulled next to it, parallel. I did a quick walkaround and returned to the passenger side of our vehicle to get a paper and pencil., then walked between the two vehicles to write down a phone number.
As I straightened up, I noticed a guy walking around the other side of the car, and he immediately started small talk, like "nice car, are you the owner?", and walking toward me. I walked away, turned back toward our car walking around the back of it to get to the passengers side, and noticed another guy hanging back, between our car and an older Lincoln that had pulled in about three spaces down. This guy started walking toward me. There were two others in the back seat of the Lincoln. I quickly got into the car and we drove away. The whole thing just reeked of setup.
The area was a classic "fringe area", close enough for prey but far enough away for operation, the small talk to get me close, the second acting like a pincer, and a general feeling of "wrongness".Like something is going on I don't quite understand.
What I did right-- Refusing to let #1 get close, walking away looking directly at the second guy, and not letting myself be trapped between them, and exiting quickly.
What I did Wrong-- not being aware of the Lincoln pulling up, because I was leaned over writing a phone #, not communicating with my wife, and NOT HAVING A GUN!!! The classic I'm only going to the store line...

I think you did everything right. You trusted that feeling that something wasn't right and you acted on it right away. Sounds to me like you have good situational awareness. Glad everything worked out OK.

Sounds like you did right. So many situations can be avoided simply by being aware of your surroundings and acting fast. It always helps to have some sort of self defence weapon on hand though (I at least will have a knife on me whenever I'm out and about).

You did fine, nobody has eyes in the back of their head (-not seeing the Lincoln). The beauty of it is, it is completely irrelevent whether they were setting you up or merely curious about the car...you had a feeling, listened to it and left. No harm to anyone. It's the time when you rationalize a gut feeling away and don't leave that could get you in trouble.

Should've called in suspicious activity report.

Next person to check out the car might not be able to escape as quickly as you could.

Nice, Tokugawa, sounds like you did the right things. Why weren't you carrying, was it bc it's not allowed in your locale?

You did fine, nobody has eyes in the back of their head

Tell my girlfriend that...:uhoh:

I'm suprised you survived the encounter using only your wits;)
You were lucky this time:D

Never be a victim

Most fatalities occur within 20 miles of home. Most robberies too. There is NO SUCH THING as just driving up for ice cream. Pack everywhere you go! I'm glad you're both okay. Thank-you for sharing. We all need to be reminded never to drop our guard.

Excellent use of your "gut" feeling.

Glad everything worked out. You did a good job of using your situational awareness. Can't see everything all the time. You did good and thanks for posting this.

The best way I have ever heard of to survive an encounter like that, is to never put yourself in a position where it can happen.
I am sure glad you and yours were able to leave with nothing bad happening.
Bet you will take your gun next time you go out :)

IMO - job well done.

Good situational awareness (condition yellow does NOT mean you will see 100% of what goes on around you in real time) and you listened to your feelings on what you were seeing. You acted postivily and without hesitation - at least it sounds that way.

As someone above pointed out - no harm done to anyone if you were wrong in this situation. You may have saved a life if you were right.

Yeah I did have my piece the next day- just missed being at the Tacoma mall when the shooting was going on. Yikes.
