I keep telling myself it's for the boys (13 and 9) - seems like a nice handy .308 rifle and if fed mild cast bullet loads ...

IIRC, they used two different actions for the FR-8. Some were 98 Mausers and some were pre-98 Mausers. Some people had concerns about the pre-98s handling the .308.

The FR-8 is a fun, handly little carbine. You won't regret it.

as far as strength - I'll be fed a steady diet of Ed Harris's 'The Load'

Last summer I fired an FR7 with ball - recoil was stout and blast was impressive.

My oldest likes to shoot my Ishapore Enfield sitting and prone but it's just to long and heavy for him offhand

I recently bought an almost pristine FR-8. Best $225 I've spent in a long, long time. It's a very well made, compact, lightweight carbine thats chambered for a reasonably useful round. You'll eventually get used to the rear sight :)
I wouldn't hesitate a second to recommend one......

Hello

Every gun I buy is "for the boys". I was in the same boat. For the last 4 years I watched the price steadily increase on these rifles. I always opted for black, mag fed guns instead. Now with the price of EBR's thru the roof, I have been buying all the oddball guns I have eyed over the years. The FR-8 was one of the first. I paid $325 shipped to my dealer. That's almost $150 over what I used to see them for.

BUY IT NOW, FOR THE BOYS

I say BUY IT NOW!!! I was trying to scrimp for one, when I found my Ishapore 7.62N

They're ugly, is that enough reason?

I mean, c'mon, a short, handy little carbine with a straight, easy to get to bolt handle, a flash hider and that takes an easily found bayonet? Nobody needs one of those durned things!

(I admit it, I wimped out and put a black recoil pad on mine, sometimes I'm not sure if I regret doing that or not. But then I shoot it and smile because I bought it to shoot, not to be a collector's item.)

Yeah, seriously. I bought one on a lark, and it has to be the most fun I've ever had with a bolt gun. It's like a M-N carbine without having your shoulder hammered (well, quite as much, anyway).

I was just lurking around and thought I'd check out this thread. I'd never really heard of an FR-8 so I did a search to see what they looked like. I'm really impressed with that gun. It looks like a really cool gun! I've always wanted a real short barrelled bolt action. I'll have to do some more research and read up on it. What is the going price for one of these things and where can you find them for sale at?

They were going for $150 a few years back. I think they're more around $300 now, and you'll have to look around. I don't think anyone at the major surplus houses has a supply in stock, which means you're reduced to gunbroker-type sites, private sales, and gunshop hunting.

Mike

I was afraid of that. Those things are so freakin cool looking! I think I've got a new number one gottahave. I looks like that's the only one even listed on GunBroker....that's surely not a good sign.

Where did you say you were looking at this rifle at again? Just playin...

Don't, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, buy an FR-8 rifle.

Put your money into something else, like ammo, or reloading equipment, if you don't currently reload.

Now I have to Google FR-8 to see what you shouldn't buy.

I want one of these so bad. I don't trust gunbroker at all anymore though. I guess it will just make that much more special when I find one...

BUY IT!!!

Hahaha, Inspector.

Yeah I'd have to be pretty desperate to buy from GunBroker. I haven't ever bought anything from there yet and hope it doesn't ever get that bad to make me go there.

I've bought stuff from gunbroker. Most of it was exactly as advertised. Only one thing had an unreported mechanical problem (S&W revolver), which may not have been noted by the seller and was easily fixed.

The real thing you have to look out for is the...ahem...optimistic pricing found on some guns.

**saving the "supply and demand, true capitalism" lecture that is in the running for the new motto of THR. :neener:

I would like a FR-8 since it looks to have the same bayonet lug and flash hider as my Cetme. Shoots the same .308 round and it even looks like the front sling hook is the same as a Cetme's too, yeah that's it, gotta tell my wife I need the rifle so I dont have to buy another bayo if I get something other than the FR-8...
