Pros and Cons of Yugo M48

Stout kick, ammo used to be very cheap (10 cents per round) but not so much any more. 8mm is a powerful round on the same scale as 7.62x54r or 30-06.
Prices for the rifle are fairly modest for the rifle itself. Usually around 150 or less. I got mine from Classic Arms and it was fairly well covered in that wonderfully sticky stuff called cosmoline. The stock was literally black from soaking in the stuff for so long. Mine shoots high and to the left and so far I haven't been able to get the front sight to move. But the barrel was bright and the rifling was solid, in fact it looks like the barrel was new when it was tossed into storage. And once I got the stock cleaned up it turned out to be a nice medium colored walnut.
Cons - I haven't looked into this much, but I believe the Yugo's have a different 'ring' size compared to the k98's or other mausers which may limit some of the aftermarket stuff out there if you want to go that route.

It is in its original specs. Only RWS and Norma load the 8 mm Mauser "full house" as far as I know.
The 8 mm ammo made by American and most European manufacturers is loaded just a little bit more than 30-30 levels.
Surplus ammo are full power but not good for hunting because of their FMJ bullets.
Good point saturno. I haven't used anything other than surplus so I was basing that statement on surplus ammo. That's the reason I first bought a Yugo Mauser and an M44 - cheap surplus ammo equals more trigger time.
I bought enough 8mm and x54r that I have no need to look at commerical ammo in either. If I wanted to hunt with one I would probably hand load. But I don't hunt much in the way of big game anymore so not a concern for me right now.

Mine was about $150.00 after FFL fee. When I took possession of it, it was absolutely free of cosmo, even the bolt, and in unissued condition. I love that rifle. The only alteration I have made is to put a scout scope mount on it that simply replaces the rear sight leaf, with a 2.5X handgun scope. The 2.5X is just enough to give a little assist to 59-1/2 year old eyes.
Sellier & Belloit and Prvi Partisan have full power hunting ammunition, I always see it at gunshows.

had a gunsmith drill and tap the receiver . he mounted a yugo zrak q d scope mount on it . shoots great . it cost $55 for the work . i paid $169 for the yugo bo m48 mauser unissued ,unfired .
The only downside to the M48 and 24/47
Mausers is the intermediate-length, large-ring action.
Basically, if you're going to do a custom rifle, you're limited to cartridges of 7.92x57 length or shorter. So '06-family cartridges, or any magnums, are out.
Granted, that leaves some fantastic rounds...

I had just wiped clean my M 48 A one I got from a Pawnshop 7 yrs ago for $ 130 otd. ALthough I had this decosmos for a long time , the residual greasy smell is so unmistakable. Hope this will be gone in due time . I used diluted wood cleaner from Lowes.
Now this thing shoots like a big mule in aggressive mode. If combined with Turk 1940s surplus, it barks like no other. ANd expect bruises afterwards. But it prints like 2.5 -3 inch group on sandbag at 100 yds. I love this rifle.
