Anyone have any experience with a lube called White Lightning? It is sold as a bicycle chain and sproket lube. It works very well for that purpose. I got to thinking about using it as a gun lube. Anyone with any thoughts?

It is

but it really works well in a dirty conditions. The new name for the product is Clean Ride. I have e-mailed them for their thoughts.

So at one time I played around with various car waxes etc on a 1911 IPSC gun, just to see how it went.

With those kinds of things I found that the heat pretty much made it come right off.

Dunno if this stuff would do the same. I've used it on my bike, it's very slick for sure.

Be interesting to hear what they tell you.

My experience was that it would wash off easily, and didn't seem to fulfill its promise of a cleaner running chain.

I went back to a more conventional lube for my bike chain (pro-gold).

I believe auto pistols are better served by lubes developed for ways and cams, where shear strength is a key factor.

I tried it for folding knives and found that if you use it on a knife that you are carrying and using frequently, it does fine.

But, if you put it on the pivot of a knife and then let it sit unused for a long time, it seems to "set up" and loose it's fluidity and look like wax.

I'd be afraid of it doing that inside a gun.

The manufacturer says

It will work fine for firearms. I will start with my Ed Brown.

.

I can't recommend using a wax "lube" (its not a lubricant, its a wax) on
anything, least of all bike chains and God forbid, guns. Eek, etc.

Oh, that white lightning, never mind. There was this body shop in Opelika where the guy who ran it....well, that was along time ago.

sm (#13) : I had a similar reaction : a friendly chemistry student we knew in our teens, a long time ago, used to concoct some pretty potent stuff we called "white lightning".
