What are you using for Coyotes?

I HATE coyotes!!!
I understand the whole "circle of life" thing-- the Lion King taught me that. But I'll be damned if I have to listen to it happening when I go outside. Last spring, I had to listen to a coyote pack killing a young deer in the pine thicket that I have behind my house.

My coyote set-up:

Rifle:
DTI AR-15: 1:7 twist chrome-lined 16" barrel and M4 feedramps for heavier and longer bullets

Optics:

Millet DMS-1 1-4x22 illuminated circle-dot.

(will be replaced with either of the following: )

Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x22 illuminated SPR recticle
Nightforce 1-4x22 NDX
Meopta K-Dot 1-4x22

I like the Millet DMS-1, but it lacks more than I'd like in the light transmission department-- especially since all I really shoot with my AR is coyotes.

Cartridges:

Still looking for what will work best. So far, I've used Winchester Ballistic Tip 55 grain with success. But I only used these because they were on my shelf at Walmart and I've been shooting the .308 165 grain Ballistic Tips deer hunting for years with great success.

Gotta Love Pics

Here is my current rig; the Model 7 I mentioned earlier (I posted this image before and had about 5 offers to buy my filp-flops). Alas I traded my Ruger #1 for Python a few years back.

Anyone had any success on Coyotes with a pistol?

Rifle: Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA Varmint

Caliber: .223 Rem

and bullet: Any, but WWB 45 gr HP among them.

Barrel Length: 22"

Action type: Turnbolt

Or, anything I have in my hands (of adequate power) when I see one and can get a shot, which is not very often. I personally think the .22 K-Hornet - .218 Bee range is the preferred minimum for going after them. .243 Win for long shots.

Hinton, what is your (beautiful) model 7 chambered in?

Night time:
Encore Pro Hunter Khatadin in 500 S&W w/ 350 gr XTP Mag 41 gr H110
or Savage 22 mag bolt action

Day Time:
Encore Pro Hunter 300 wm 125 Sierra 64 gr IMR4895 or 180 Barnes TSX 71 gr IMR4831
or Savage 22 mag

Building a Savage 22-250 to replace the 300 wm

Mini-14 with 55 grain V-max if I am in my truck.
Remington 700 in .243 95 grain Nosler from the house.
Never got close with a handgun.

Hinton-3:

6mm Remington, 75 gr Hornady V-Max, 18.5" barrel, Leupold 3-9X.

900F

My coyote laser is a CZ 527 American 223 with a 4x Leupold.

50g. Sierra Spitzer, 27.0g H335.

The last ten coyotes I've shot with it have been between 150-285yards and every one dropped dead in it's tracks.

IMG_1498.jpg

I got this one last week while out checking the cows, 285 yards, kneeling shot.

Norinco SKS using basic Winchester Super-X power points. Here it's not possible to shoot out beyond 125-150 yards, most are 50-75 yards.

16 inch AR15 in .223 using handload of 64gr PP and Varget. I run an Aimpoint set at PBR for my load. Have taken a few with a 10mm 1911. Want to try out my DE .50AE on them too.

303 British number 4 mark 1 * 1943 long branch open sights my longest shot is where i hunt coyotes is maybe 120 yards at the most . ive never seen one that bad IndianaBoy what that mange ?

i just got done loading some 70gr speer sp in 223 for my AR
i've never hunted coyote before either but there starting to take over around here so this year i'm going to start

Dr. Winslow - The Model 7 is a custom shop option chamber in .223 Rem.

Indiana Boy - that is an awesome group from a 220 Swift...that is a special rifle.

Rancho Relaxo - I have heard nothing but good things about the CZ 527, how long have you owned it and how well does it shoot?

hinton03-

I've owned the 527 American for a few years now. I was initially disappointed at the kind of accuracy I was getting from it, turns out I just needed to find the right handload for it. My 527 Laminate 223 is so much fun to shoot from the bench I probably tried ten different bullet weights/types. The American I started with 50grain Sierra's and stopped testing when I got this:

CZ527Americangroup.jpg
I was getting 1.25" groups with every other powder charge. I've been using it since on coyotes, ground squirrels, and jackrabbits. I'm very happy with having a fixed 4x Leupold, it just really works for me.

Now before some blowhard comes and tells me I didn't test enough to say that all my groups are like that, I'm well aware that I don't have enough rounds on paper with this rifle to say that it always shoots that way, or it never does. That's okay though, it's definitely not a bench gun, I know it shoots like a laser in the field though.

Depends on how we plan to take them or if I have to walk alot.

If hiking is going to be involved: Ruger M77 Youth rifle in .223

If there isnt going to be alot of walking my favorite is a Remmington 700 XCR Compact tacticle with silencer and Nightforce scope.

on acation I will tote an AR-15 and an FN MK I 12ga.

An Oneida Victor #4...

Yes on the pistol, I got one with my glock 35. The dumb ass just stood 40 yds off the side of the road and looked at me like I wasn't going to slam on the brakes and shoot him.

Had a buddy in the 80's with a Mohawk in .222; he swore by that gun.

He used to piss me off because I had a .223 Rem 700 BDL heavy barrel and he had this ugly Rem 788 in .223 that would shoot the pants off my varmit rig.
