I really like my new LCT, but Lee's instructions are awful!

I finally got to the point in my handloading room project that I could set up my new LCT. Setting up the press was pretty straight forward, but I misplaced the instructions somehow moving the stuff from the house to the garage, so I had to wing it. Lee, of course, doesn't have instructions for the LCT online.

So, I got the press set up and decided to give the Safety Prime system a try. Well, guess what, the instructions included with the Safety Prime don't have information for setting up the system on the LCT. They have Lee's Single Stage press and the other turret, but not the LCT. So, I go to the website to watch the video I remember being there. Of course despite the other turret press videos using a LCT, the safety prime installation video is with a regular turret press. That is no help, so I wing it. I got it right eventually, after first experiencing all the primers I tried to feed falling on the floor and some other problems. Lee says that the stippling on the inside of the primer try insure that all the primers end up facing the right way when they feed. Lee is dreaming about that, I'd say half to two thirds of the primers I got to feed were upside down. I think I've got it sorted out now, but it was a lot more trouble than it should have been.

I just got an Auto Disk Pro in the mail from Midway, having decided it was cheaper to get one rather than try to convert one of my Uniflows to work well on the LCT. I hope Lee's directions for the measure are better than the others I have seen so far, but I'm not holding my breath.

I suppose Lee has to save money somewhere to offer the prices they do, and it looks like its on paying someone to write instructions and keep the website up to date.

You DO know that you're supposed to dump the primers in the tray, then softly shake the tray side to side while holding the tray level? The rings, or as you call it stippling catches on the primer anvils, flipping them anvil up.

You complain the instructions are vague, but you don't have them. So how do you know?

I understand how the Safety Prime is supposed to work in theory, I just don't find that it works in practice as well as they claim. I have the instructions for the safety prime, just not the press. The safety prime instructions fail to mention the existence of the LCT, let alone explain how to install it. The LCT has been around for better than 3 years, it should be covered on the website and in the instructions for the safety prime.

Landric, did you look at the primers before you put the lid on the primer tray? They all have to be facing anvil up before you put the lid on. I've never had even one primer come out up-side-down if they were all facing up in the first place.

I agree, Lee doesn't have the best instructions. They need to write them with the thought in mind that the people reading them have never even seen a reloading press, but they seem to take some things for granted.

If you have questions, someone here can most likely help.

I agree with Dean here. I had a small problem with the safety prime at first but it was quickly resolved. It has worked near flawless since. Landric if your pro auto disk is like mine it will come set up for the chain. The directions were clear for me except where to attach the spring, crappy picture. If you have the same problem and want some pictures let me know, I would be happy to take some.

Thanks for the help folks. I think the problem with the Safety Prime was mostly just me getting frustrated with it since the instructions were not available for the press I have. It was quite a PITA to get set up, but I think its good to go now.

I'm not new to handloading, I've been doing it for 15 years, but this is my first time with Lee equipment. I've used both RCBS and Dillon in the past (and still RCBS) and the instructions for both were much better.

Rusty, thanks for the offer, I'll let you know if I need help. Provided I can get it set to throw 3.5 grains of Trail Boss effectively, I'll probably never mess with the setting again.

I am very impressed with the quality of the LCT, and once I got it rolling I can see it being a much faster system than what I have been using. I give the press very high marks.

Landric, I've been following your saga; building the reloading room and your acquisition of the LCT. A nifty read. The ONLY negatory thing I can say about Lee is their "destructions"; that's been pretty well documented here. I will add that the folks in Hartford are friendly and helpful.
The only info I could share has already been addressed by previous posters. I would only add that there's plenty of help right here! Of course, you've already found that out. The LCT owners have a pile of hands on knowledge to share with you. Good Luck. Keep us informed.

You have viewed Lee's very good video instructions on their website? It shows how to attach the Safety Prime to the turret quite well, as well as all their other items in actual use. Yes, their printed materials are not the 'best' they could be.

the videos are at:

http://www.leeprecision.com/html/HelpVideos/video.html

a very good tutorial on the LCT can be found at:

http://www.surplusrifle.com/reviews2006/leeturretpress/index.asp

It includes CLEAR & CONCISE info on how to setup the primer tray.

FWIW I too have had no issues using the safety prime system on my LCT or my single stage.

Maybe it's because I have spent my life as a diesel mechanic/machinist, but I have never had any problems with Lee's instructions if I have them handy and read them. Personally I haven't had any problems setting up Lee products without the instructions...Just too simple of a machine...

Some observations:

1. Both the 'old' and 'new' rings / dots on the primer tray work fine once you learn how to shake it Some people (DarwinT?) even do their shaking over a tray to contain any that may pop out. My technique usually results in 95-98% flipping; I may turn one or two by hand.

2. If you have trouble with the Safety Prime starting to catch or not place primers, check to see if you have the right primer size for the head: "Large Primers"=White Dispenser.

3. For a comprehensive set of videos for nearly all Lee products, check out TheLoadmasterForums.

All brands of primer trays work. It does take a bit of patience and some attention to what's happening though.

I agree with The Bushmaster. I too have worked as a mechanic of this or that for many years and find machinery easy to get around. Attention to detail is a great help in reloading for many reasons.
