My reason for this purchase is to carry the firearm on and off duty, I cant figure which one to have. I have held many pistols at my local dealer and have owned many as well and I find that the XDm and Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm are very good guns. I own the XDm new in the box and have never shot it but now regret it and kind of want the M&P9mm. A few reasons for the switch are because there are no duty holsters for the XDm. The M&P has many holsters made for it and was made with police in mind. I also like that the M&P has a magazine saftey and that the grip is very well made and fits in my hand. However the XDm is really cool looking fits in my hand well and has 20 round capacity. So both fit my hand very well and I love both of them but which one is more accurate and reliable, does anyone own an M&P that can give me some advice on it's performance, as well as the XDm. Please I am only talking about the XDm not the XD, already owned an XD then sold it.:scrutiny:

I own both, an M&P 9 and an XDm 9. As you probably know they are both excellent firearms. IMHO, for concealment, the M&P would likely get the nod. That XDm grip is friggin' HUGE and I've not found a rig yet that can make it reasonably well-concealed. The M&P still holds 17+1 so there's not a huge advantage in terms of capacity for the XDm.

Forgot to mention, the M&P, again IMHO, actually shoots more comfortably than the XDm. You will definitely like it's feel.

Agree with dacavasi - I'd go with the M&P9. I've shot it extensively and it fits the hand very well. A friend of mine carries it on duty in .45 and also enjoys it.

As a side not (if it's important to you) you can get Crimson Trace laser grips for the M&P, not the XD (I don't think). You could swap out the grips at night when you get home and keep it on the bedstand...

both great guns... I would give the edge to the xdm out of its pure BAD ASS looking qualifications... there are holsters available for most anything... even if it must be made for you... and a good holster can hold ANYTHING comfortably...

I would try an M&P. I have it in .40 s&w and really like it, and am pretty accurate with it after lobbing a few thousand rounds downrange.

( A few reasons for the switch are because there are no duty holsters for the XDm.)
?
I have a XD .40 5" tactical and a XD 9mm 4" and I have a Backhawk Serpa holster that works with both of them.

Are you limited to the type of holster you can use?

My son has the M&P .40 and it's a nice gun but my preference was the XD .40. I liked it so much that I went and got another in 9mm.

I posted in another thread that we were both at the range firing some cheap ammo (Fiocchi) and his M&P had multiple failures to feed on every mag while my XD performed flawlessly.

This may be an isolated incident but it is enough for me to avoid grabbing his gun should I ever need one for self defense. I like that my XD will eat anything I throw in it.

What ever your choice, you need to shoot it and shoot it often because your life may depend on it.

Is it that you want the M&P for the reasons you stated or are you just looking for an excuse to buy another gun? :D

I'd say the above was an isolated incident. I've put about 2000 rounds downrange with my M&P .40 with all kinds of ammo, (monarch, remington, federal, winchester, blazer, etc). I've had no failures to fire or jams.

If I had to choose -- I'd go w/ the M&P. Nicer ergos and if its a duty gun, there should be a LE discount you can qualify for
