I can't stop thinking about it so I need to ask it. I have no idea the current going rate of most 1911s so I seek the gurus of this site. I am refering to a decent looking one... nothing too rough around the edges. It can be new or used in good condition... I am not expecting this list to be incredibly long so I can't be too picky. No shorter than a 4.25" barrel... I don't like the stubby look of a shorter barrel and yes I am kinda picky in that area. I know ammo costs more but for some reason I can't get the desire of a 1911 out of my head.

So my question is what would my options be if I offered $550 and an Armor Express Evolution carrier with Level 2 Halo plates in "like-new" condition?

I DO have pictures of it for proof that it is in great shape. I know not many of the people around here feel a vest is very desireable but still... This is my curiosity getting the best of me and that urge to own a 1911 is extremely strong...

Thank you for your responses...

Sarco has new Rock Island 5", GI style, 1911s for $339.95. That will be hard to beat at the low end of prices for a new, decent quality 1911. Used 1911 prices will be dependent upon the market for them where you live. $340 would be a very good price in my area.
Regards,
Greg

I would also need to pick up new grips though because I am sorry those grips look like crap... I would just ship a gun without them before I stuck that on one... Haha I actually have grips for a paintball gun that would fit a 1911. I could actually afford that without putting the vest into the equation. I have absolutely no use for a bulletproof vest though.

I'd say sell the vest, (what's that worth, $100?), and then you have a $650 kitty. Shop around pawn shops, gun stores, etc., and find a good used Colt or similar quality one. $650 should do it. On the lowest end, I think the cheapest best deal is the same it's been for a long time, find a used Norinco in good shape. They are reliable, solidly made. They were made in China and Clinton banned them in 1994. Excellent ones run about $400 to $450 now once you find one.

I don't know about the vest it is around $600 new... less than 2 years old and is in like-new shape... I have no clue what it is really worth. I have seen them go for $300 so I guess it is all about who is willing... I may sell the vest for cash depending on whether or not I can find someone interested in a trade. I would rather look around for that before I just go straight up and sell it. I will find out soon though. I was going to go with a poly gun but for some reason I can't stop looking at and wanting a 1911...

Get a Norinco. They are easily found for under $500 and are made to better specs with better steel than the American-made 1911s.

Do not get a Brazilian or Filipino gun. They start out really nice, but where a quality forged frame and slide may wear, they can be fixed. The cast and MIM parts on the cheapies are done when they exhibit excessive wear.

If Norks were made in the USA they'd cost $800. If Springers were made in the US they'd cost what they already cost. If Rock Island were US made they'd be $50 cheaper.

If price is a major concern get a Charles Daly. They are Filipino, but they stand behind their warranty and their guns.

To be honest, Colts and Kimbers are only a couple hundred bucks more than lesser imitations. I'd just wait a little longer.

Another thought, when, or if, you decide to sell it, having Colt or Kimber stamped on its side makes it worth at least $200 more. You won't lose if you buy quality.

I've got 1911's in .45 and .38 super. I'd like to have one in 9mm.

If you are going to take the plunge, give some thought to the cost of the ammo to feed it. If ammo isn't breaking your wallet, you'll shoot more.

Haha it isn't a problem around here because you generally can't find any caliber period anyway and almost all the ammo has gone up to the point where it is all about the same price...

Loop, Have you ever owned a Rock or STI? Anything from Armscor? I'd rather buy a 1911 with a great lifetime warranty rather than a Norinco. Which comes with none. Talk about supporting the US. I'd rather support the Phillipines than China. Also, how much does the work cost to get it up and running properly? A friend of mine bought one on GB for $550.00 and it cost him another $450.00 for it to work right. Funny, i own 2 Rocks, and have had NO problems with either. I think your information about Rocks are "One-sided". And did you know Rock's are made on old Colt machining equipment? Wow, nice opinion. There are alot of economy 1911 platforms out there, And Yes, Charles Daly's are fine for Phillipino built, and a nice guy to talk to. Brizilian?, don't know too much about them. But i do own a SA Mil-Spec built in 1984. Pre-Brizilian? Don't know, and really don't care. And it shoot's just fine. I guess you drive a American vehicle (Ford or GM.) but, guess what, their made in Mexico and Canada. I guess everyone puts forth their opinions rather than "owned" facts, that's all. Sorry!:banghead: What i'm really trying to say. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

a 1911 is a 1911 is a 1911

hey hippie-

future congrats on becoming a member of the 1911 club,

my first was an auto-ordnance WW2 edition, great gun, seems to be made well, has a pretty authentic WW2 look, etc..it was accurate and reliable out of the box, no complaints

my second 1911 was a colt sistema- really rough looking, but still loveable as they all are, accurate and reliable- even though it was poorly treated and had some age on it

my third was a SA Mil-Spec- and like the others, accurate and reliable with every round fired...

i guess i say all this to say that to me, a 1911 is going to prolly be a great gun no matter if the slide is MIM or forged or cast from old chevy bumpers, and no matter what is written on the slide...

i would keep budget in mind for your first one...then you will better know what you want for your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc...:D

Taurus makes a decent 1911 for around that price Armscor for a little less, but i dont know much bout them. if you willing to spend a bit more i love my STI Spartan

I am working on my 3rd. I started with a problem free Norinco. For fun I changed the trigger to a Wilson Combat, Hogue wood grips, the sights to Millett 100 series and hammer to a Kings with only slight fitting for the sights. Your experience may vary.

I am trying to get a Colt 1911 or maybe a Commander... I am not too sure what I will be going with yet but I do know it won't be a $1000+ gun lol I want money for ammo too...

The Brazilian guns are forged if you are refering to Springfield.

There are plenty of fine 45 autos availible that yoou shouldn't
limit yourself to 1911S.Many people who've bought them were gravely dissappoointed. They jam a lot.I have a beautiful CZECHKOSLOVAKIH CZECH
CZ97B.Its high gloss black and functioons flawlessly. You can shoot 2 to 300
rounds And rarely jams. It cost me about $600.Some may think me a com-
munist but my gun dooesn't jam.

But he may want to limit himself to taking advice from:

1) Those that have at least enough mental capacity to at least spell
2) Wait longer than their 2nd post to disregard the OP's explicit information requests and tell them and all other posters they are wrong.

Maybe you should stick to the question at hand to stay on topic...

Get a Springfield Armory. I own 3 of them, and they have been fantastic. Work great, look great, and brilliant customer service to back it up. You just can't beat a lifetime warranty.

You'll never regret havin a Colt MK IV Series 70 Goverment Model.A very clean used one can run from $700-$900. If i'm not mistaken, Colts' custom shop is now offering a new run of an old great gun. The Colt MK-IV Series 70 Goverment Model fer around $1,000

You are recomending a pistol that rarely jams vs a 1911? 1911's with tuned extractors and quality magazines and ammo can and do run flawlessly.

A 1911 is easy to get parts for, looks better to me than any gun I've seen, and is what really got me interested in handguns in general. It is the ONLY .45 I am interested in. If I get anything else it will more than likely be a S&W M&P in 9mm or .40S&W. This is fairly specific on a 1911 because I want one...

It is NOT the caliber so much as the gun. If I can't find a 1911 I will more than likely start looking for a M&P or possibly even a glock... probably not... but the M&P is a definite maybe. I like the ease of buying parts for a 1911 though.

Yeah I am one of the lucky few I guess because when it comes to firearms I have never felt any that don't fit my hand well so I can pretty much pick anything up and use it. I had no issue with the XD but my gripe was in the way the frame was on the one I was using. It had a mold line down the center that wasn't trimmed at all and really irritated your hand when you fired it... I got tired of little cuts all over my hand lol.

MD i've owned the CZ97,CZ makes very good guns, and i take it your luck has been good as far as malfunctions with the 97, Good because mine would not get past one mag without jamming. i know it's a big debate and to the taste of the individual out there, and i've been thru justa about every make and model out the in 45acp all the polymers, the c/z,and other variant's and i can honestly tell you from my experience,A QUALITY 1911, EVEN IN THE PRICE RANGE $650.00 , as he originally posted can run flawlessly without a hitch, not that the 97 is not a good gun but there is some that jam as well as some 1911's.
